Please check if your blank DVD's are dual layer ( DL ) 8.5 GB disc. If so your player does not support dual layer writing. It will record only on 4.7GB single layer blank discs.

I have dubbed vcr tape

Did you say you used a DVD-RW disc to transfer a videotape onto? The reason your PC won't recognise that disc is because the data format on it is a different language to what PCs understand - plus an unfinalised DVD-RW won't play in other DVD players - it is usually an incompatible format.

(DVD+RW discs with titles/top menus created in video mode CAN be played on a PC DVD drive or a normal DVD player as can finalised DVD-R discs (DVD-R discs MUST be recorded and finalised in the same recorder for compatible playback). DVD-RW discs can only be viewed on the unit they were written/recorded on.

The other reason for the 'remaining space' on the disc you describe showing less than 120 minutes is due to a title recently being recorded or erased - unless you format it - the 120 minute / 4.7GB DVD-RW will not show full available space. Erasing titles on re-writable DVDs does not increase space. The same rule applies to unfinalised +R / -R discs (you cannot re-format these to get the space back once recorded - they are 'once only' writables)

I recommend you invest in some DVD-R discs and re-copy your VHS tape to that - then if you are satisfied with the result, title etc., finalise the DVD-R - it will play on any DVD player or PC with DVD support (or it should). These discs are relatively inexpensive to buy just about anywhere.

Final note: do NOT finalise the DVD-RW you recorded (I hope you haven't already done this) - simply format/erase it - re-use it for something else or keep it until you need it.

You can use any brand of DVD, just take note of the format before recording/playing.

My combo dvd/vcr is only

Unless you are prepared to spend a small fortune in workshop repairs, this unit is basically toast (or at least the VCR deck is). Even if it was fixable, it would be uneconomical. Does the DVD recorder deck work OK? if so, maybe you could use that manually with an external VCR connected for tape transfer. If not, throw the whole unit in the bin and buy a new one - it wouldn't be worth the money fixing this.

The difference between the cost of a brand new unit vs. the repairs to this can be significant; it's cheaper in the long run to replace the whole combo.

However, you can submit the unit to a service centre, obtain a quote on repairs/parts cost(s), and a second opinion about it - then you can make a decision afterwards as to what you want to do from there. It is up to you.

Only consider buying a new machine as a last resort. Get the workshop quote first. I don't think any reset would fix the VCR problem - as a reset usually only restores units such as these to factory default settings - via electronics - it does not deal with mechanics.

I want to burn a dvd from what I have recorded in

The easiest way to connect this is to find the cable going from the receiver to the TV and disconnect it from the TV. Connect this cable to the back of the DVD player where it says "in" or "input".
Next take another cable and connect it from the DVD player output to the TV. You may need to cycle or change your input by pressing the input or source button on your TV, in order to get a picture.

When I try to record a program I get a

Try this. his seems to be a common problem on all DVD players.

If a DVD Lens cleaner (with brushes) fails to fix the problem, then it could be that you have

grease particles on the lens. Do the following:

Note. If unit is still under warranty, you may nullify this by opening unit up

You will need:
Screwdrivers as necessary
Cotton Bud sticks (also known as Q-tips)
Isoproponal/Isopropyl Alcohol (small bottle comes with some CD/DVD cleaners)
Compressed Air cannister/aerosol

1. After disconnecting unit, leave standing for 15 minutes
2. Unscrew lid and remove
3. Carefully remove DVD lens cover
4. Blast whole area with compressed air to remove dust
5. Dip one end of cotton bud in Isoproponal, and very carefully wipe DVD lens (just one wipe

should do.)
6. Now wipe lens with dry end of cotton bud, and leave a few seconds to dry
7. Carefully replace DVD lens cover (watch out for ribbon cables)
8. Replace Lid
9. Reconnect, switch on and test

Just want to reset the

If the combo unit is not showing any front panel displays or lights, you can try the reset option (if you have the manual or can remember how to do it) with this model (or you can unplug unit for 1 hour maximum, then reconnect to power and see if it will startup), but if it still does not power up at all afterwards, then there is a good chance the power supply circuit has failed - multiple faulty/leaky electrolytic capacitors/open-circuit fusible resistors/short-circuit IC regulators/leaky or shorted diodes. If this is the case, it may be expensive and/or uneconomical to repair this unit.

A factory reset would probably not cure the total power failure. It would be a PSU circuit issue, which, unless you are tech. savvy, would really require a service centre fix. If you go to a repair shop with the unit, get a quote and second opinion so that you can make a sure decision afterwards to go further or not.

It is up to you (you can always say NO if it is too much or not worth it or is likely to cost more than the retail price of a new machine).

It might be a straightforward repair that a qualified technician with adequate facilities, test equipment, and access to parts/boards (if necessary) can accomplish .

These, like all DVD recorder/VCR combo units, are great little 'gadgets' when they work properly, but can prove either impossible or expensive to repair when they fail (which is often).

Fingers crossed on whatever outcome you decide to go with.

1. Hold down the clear AUX button until all lights light up at the top of the remote
2. Punch in a 3 digit code (provided below)
3. Press the # (POUND) button
4. Try powering the VCR on/off, and the volume. If one or more of these functions do not work, start over from step 1 with a different code

I have surroundsound. I have dish network with hd

To get the functionality you're looking for you'll need to to take the cable running from your DVR output and connect it to the input on your DVD recorder. Next you want to connect a cable from your DVD recorder output and connect it to your TV. If this is an HD set up you want to use HD Cables for all of the connections.

It will not record. it is programed.

Is it the dvd or the vcr mode that will not record? What source are you recording from - ie are you trying to record a channel that the tuner can read or is it coming from a set top box? Is the clock properly set for timed recording? This unit only has an NTSC (analog) tuner. If you are recording OTA from a converter box, make sure the correct channel/input is selected for the unit to see the content from the converter box.

If it's the dvd, make sure that there is sufficient space on the disc. Also check that the disc is not finalized and is compatible. Try a different brand. Is the machine recognizing discs properly? If it isn't reading any disc, then the tracking might be off or the laser needs cleaning. Try a cleaning disc but the unit may need service. DRM issues may apply for content from a set top box and block the recording to DVD.

If it is the VCR, then make sure that the tape has sufficient space left and that the write protect tab has not been removed from the cassette. (If it has and you do want to overwrite it, put tape over the opening.)

For timed recordings, make sure you turned off the unit after programming the schedule. You disrupt the timer when the unit is on. Power failures will also clear the programming if they last more than 30 seconds.

The unit was manufactured by Funai for Philips. You can get the manual here: http://www.funai-corp.com/support/manuals.aspx . Search for the model number to get the PDF.

I hope these ideas help.

Hi,

You simply need a co-axial to F-plug adaptor. These are very easy to obtain - any Radio Shack or similar retailer will be able to supply one. This is the part you need:

belectric_88.jpg
Please note these come in male and female configurations on both ends. You need a female F-socket to male co-axial plug. Please ask your retailer if you are unsure whether you are buying the correct one.

If you are trying to record a store bought vhs movie to dvd, there is a copy guard that is imprinted on the tape making it impossible to transfer the movie to disc effectively, on top that there probably a built in copy guard restriction in the machine making it even more difficult.

I just bought a new spindle of DVD+R (Sony) and

Are you using a stand alone dvdr(not hooked to a computer)? If so some dvd-recorders(mostly older models) May only record either dvd-r or dvd+r. They are two different formats that for all intense and purposes do the same thing. If its an older DVD recorder there may be another problem and that is the recording speed. Check the previous disc that have recorded ok and see what the recording speed was. It will look something like... 2.4X, 4X, 8X. Brand could make a difference but my gut feeling is its the recording speed. Check you owners manual it should list brand name disc as well as the recording speeds to use.
