Hi there,I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. When you stand the cleaner upright, the brushbar motor is designed to shut off automatically. However, the suction motor should continue to run unless you turn it off manually with the on/off switch. If both motors seem to be shutting off when you stand the cleaner upright, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly so we can resolve this issue for you as quickly as possible. You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to [email protected], someone will be in contact as soon as possible.Kind regards,JackDyson Online Customer Support
Place the bin on top of the filter housing, with the bin tilted slightly away from the vacuum, then while the bin pressing down and towards the vacuum keep pressing until you hear it 'click' onto the latch. Sometimes it helps to lift up the latch while you are installing the bin and then let go of the latch once the bin is installed.
The flexible hose between the beater bar housing and the connection to the dust bin might have come loose or has a hole in it. Check this hose for your low suction problem.
Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson. Most of our vacuums include a thermal cut out, which shuts the machine off if it starts to overheat. Usually this will be because the filter needs a wash, or because there's a blockage in the machine. From what you've described it sounds like there's a blockage in the hose, wand or duct. To resolve this, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://content.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=954&product=DC17-ANIMALIt's important to wash your machine's filter at least once every 3-6 months, as shown in the video above. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for it to dry completely before replacing it.This should resolve the issue, but if you would like some further advice from our experts, please email us at [email protected]. We'll be in touch as soon as possible.Best wishes,JackDyson Online Customer Supporthttp://www.dyson.com
It could be that your cyclone needs to be replaced. Depending on how the unit was cleaned (the cyclone in particular). Some people who service these machines wash the cyclone with out completely dismantling it, they just fill it with water and shake stuff out of it. This can cause debris inside the cyclone to become lodged causing clogs. If after checking for clogs and if your changeover valve is working (the piece that moves back and forth on the side of the machine when you pull the handle back to vacuum carpets) and the machine is in the upright posistion and the hose doesn't work, then you probably have a cyclone problem. If you need any help feel free to contact me.TimTheVacCenter.com
There is a piece that is part of the hose in the back that is before it gets to the "tube". If you can, take a penny, turn the tab, and remove this piece. You will notice there is a piece that attaches to the front of vaccumn is now exposed. there is a small tab on the left that needs to be outside of the casing. if it is even with or inside, the vacumn won't recline.
I cleared a blockage at the tip of the tube which I had noticed...it had not heated up or anything, I just noticed it was not picking up well, so I cleared it out. but after I cleaned it out, it would not start again. I don't know how to diagnose the problem since it will not start...could be the wire, or anything. So how do I proceed now?

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson. If your machine doesn't seem to have as much suction through the hose as normal, there may be a blockage in the hose, wand or U-bend, and the filter may need a wash. To check for blockages please follow the steps shown in our Support guide:http://content.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=969&product=DC17-ANIMALIn normal use, the filter should be washed at least once every 3-6 months as shown in the video below.
