I found this discussion going on, but I couldn't find the voltage listed anywhere. These guys are rebuilding their batteries, 7.2 was the common voltage, but the generator makes 350v at .7 mA or 18 V at 50 mA. I'll let you check out the site. Hope this helps. One expensive battery!

Metz 58 af1 D300 can't
IF what you meant is that the flash does not work when it is used with a camera trigger but works with the auto detection - LDR/ sensor, then it is possible that the horse shoe contact INPUT trigger is faulty.
The main circuit seems alright but the direct input OP-AMP can be faulty as it fails to trigger the flash from the signal from the camera. Please have the camera tested with another flash to confirm that the camera trigger is working. You can also use a shorting with a wire across the horse shoe contact to flash . If working then the flash is good or else you must open the flash unit to check the circuit.
Check on the front end circuit using a multimeter to trace from the contact to the semiconductor that fails to control the signal. The fault will be found here.
METZ 48 af-1 N "err at the place where zoom value displays in LCD
Is seem a little bit strange but it worked for fine me
The problem is mechanical. The zoommirror in the flashhead is stuck. Mostly it is a minor opstacel. That is the reason that sometimes the problem is solved by placing new batteries. The zoommotor has a little bit more power en can overcome the minor opstacel.
When the zoom is blocked it cannot be controled by the stering software and therefore it gives an error.
Solution
1. remove flash from our camera (power off).
2. knok with something hard, I used my fingerknuckle, on the side of your flash head.
3. repeat that for each side (i knocked twice on each side).
4. place our flasher on the camera and power on both.
5. If the problem isn't solved repeat it
It worked for me the first time.
Err at the place where zoom value displays in LCD
Though I am sure your solution may have been fixed already.
The guide that the reflector moves along for the Zoom.. has probably been knocked off position (either the guide/rail or the "runner" of the reflector).
