I own a Metz 45 CT 1 and I want to change the

I take it you mean the rechargeable cells in a NiCd or NiMH battery pack?

Firstly you need to prise the top off the battery pack. This is the end that goes into the flashgun. start at the "flat" side and pull the pieces of plastic on either side of the central divider toward you. They should click out and spring upwards. Work around the battery pack pulling the plastic rim away from the body. You can see where the clips are from the dents in the top plate. Work round towards the back (rounded end). The top will eventually spring off with a bit of help. If the battery has a chrge reminder "switch", remove that bit of plastic and keep it safe for later.

Now remove the long crosshead screw that you find underneath, but don't attempt to prise the unit in half yet. Next remove the battery terminal clips from the plastic. They're a push fit and will probably require some needle-nose pliers to remove. INSULATE THE REMOVED TERMINALS WITH TAPE. Otherwise you may short the terminals and melt something or explode a cell.

Now you can gently prise the two halves of the casing apart. Use a wiggling action and ease the wires down the casing to make room for tilting the two halves apart. (This will make sense as you get the casing apart). The blue and red wires have to be desoldered from the cell terminals before the casing can be completely separated.

You should now be good to remove the cells and insert your new ones. Good luck with that!

Finally reverse the above procedure to reassemble.

AC Power Supply for Metz 45 ct5

Hi daf4,

I have a circuit diagram for the 45CT-5 and the flash unit as well. The voltage is 360V DC, which goes straight across the flash tube. The top pin is positive, when the notch in the socket is on the right hand side, i.e. towards the back of the flash.

I'm also looking for a circuit diagram for a 45CL-4, if you know anyone who has one.

Regards,

Neil

Where can I get battery power pack(shell with

I have a lot of old 45-40 Series Metz 45 NiCd battery packs, that I will eventually rebuild with new NiCd batteries. I got them from Photographic Trader magazine and from ebay. I've heard that NiCd cells are going out of production, in favour of NiMH cells. I've found it's easier to put NiCd or NiMH cells in the alkaline battery holder, the flash recycle time is only slightly longer. I charge them separately out of the holder, or in the holder with a connector I made. NiMH cells need a suitable charger, with peak detection, as NiMH cells don't like being overcharged.

Metz 45 CT-1 Outup Calibration

During the flash impulse the "photocell", actually a phototransistor, charges a capacitor with current, proportional to the reflected light intensity. As soon as the voltage on that capacitor reaches the trigger voltage of a four-layer diode (which, in fact, is playing a role of a PUT) that turns on and triggers the quench thyristor. There is a trimmer potentiometer in the four-layer diode circuitry, which sets the trigger voltage. You can try to fiddling with that. But the culprit of the misalignment easily can be in any of the parts in the above described circuitry.
