I expect your tuner/amp has a fair number of ultra sensitive CMOS devices inside and a power surge is likely to be instant ***** for them - if the surge reached them. I find the best way to connect any equalizer is to connect via the tape monitor sockets, assuming that the AVR has one. From the equalizer in and out sockets - connect the Eq OUT to Tape IN on the AVR. And Eq IN to Tape OUT on the AVR. Some AVR don't allow connections, due the equalizer interfering with Surround Sound systems. If you can connect switch off the equalizer when listening to Dolby or other surround formats, as it will spoil the sound.

I would guess it's the Surround Sound mode button. Various modes in Surround Sound do not use all 5 speakers. Often the button pressed repeatedly changes between the modes. So if you press it again it might restore the sound mode to the one you had. I can't be more specific as you did not give the model number. You could try the Denon website to see if they have a free PDF of the user manual, if you have lost it. You will need the model number for that though.

Try unplugging it. Another thing is some units have a fuse in the back. Check the fuse with a multimeter for continuity. If meter shows OL then replace the fuse.
