Hi Zach, you can try the following reset as this might be a glitch in the processor.

To do the reset you need to turn the receiver on, then on the front panel of the receiver press and hold the "VCR/DVR" button while doing that press the "STANDBY/ON" button. You will see the word "Clear" in the display screen and the receiver will go into standby mode. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR AUDIO & VIDEO ASSIGNMENTS ON THE RECEIVER PLUS YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR SPEAKER CONFIGURATIONS, SPEAKER DISTANCE AND ALL LEVEL CALIBRATION SETTINGS. YOU WILL ALSO LOSE ANY PROGRAMMED RADIO STATIONS IN MEMORY. Once the receiver goes into standby mode turn it back on and go thru the setup menu for all custom settings., Thanks, JT

Change the HMDI cable, might fix the problem, intermittents of this type are very difficult to trouble shoot.

Does it have a cooling fan? if it does, then check its actually working. Protecton circuit maybe cutting in.

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts and overloads by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.

Could be the switch for the HD mode since 480p is ok. Turn the unit off and check the switch inside. It might just need some cleaning.

Is the subwoofer self-powered (signal fed by RCA cables) or is it wired into the Speaker Outputs? If the latter, take it out of the mix and see what happens. In either case, is there a subwoofer-designated output or are you borrowing from the main channels?

And check the ever present Tape Monitor switch on older equipment. If it's in the wrong position you'll possibly lose all sound but it could also have an oxidized connection in its 'normal' position, which could make one channel crackly or dead.

On old equipment it is wise to TURN THE POWER OFF and manually operate all controls fully throughout their ranges and move all switches and buttons on and off repeatedly to clean oxide. Also disconnect/reconnect every RCA cable using a twisting motion to clean them

Could be a short in the speaker wires or one of the speakers. Or it could be an internal short in the receiver. You're going to have to do some debugging to narrow it down.

Try disconnecting everything but the front left and right speakers and make sure these two speaker wires are intact (no damage like crushing or frayed wires) with clean connections at the speaker and the receiver end. If you are able to play the receiver like this with just the front two speakers connected for more than an hour, using music (use "5 channel stereo" mode to make sure you are sending a signal to all channels) then add in one speaker at a time: add the center, wait an hour with music playing through it, add the left rear speaker, wait an hour with music playing, add the right rear speaker, etc., then finally the subwoofer.

If the system shuts down after you add any of these specific channels then you've narrowed it down to the speaker wire for that channel, the speaker itself or that amplifier channel. To narrow it down further, try using a DIFFERENT WIRE and a DIFFERENT SPEAKER for the "bad channel" - if the receiver shuts down after adding the center channel, then substitute one of the rear channel speakers (and a new speaker cable) for the center channel and see if this works. If it shuts down again, then you can be pretty sure it's the amplifier/receiver at fault.

If it's the amp, then your best bet is probably to ship it to the Onkyo shop for repair unless you have a good local shop. Onkyo will send an estimate before performing the work.

But first inspect the speaker wires closely, make sure there is no damage to the wires and make sure you have clean connections on both the receiver and speaker ends with no stray strands of wire that may be rubbing against each other either on the speaker or receiver side.
