Try making sure that the receiver has any video scale upconverting disabled. A lot of TVs also have upconverting to a native resolution higher than the input signal but 2 devices doing that procesing simultaneously can cause a device conflict. I think.

I had this exact same issue. I tried two different component AV switches, and shorter cables to prevent signal loss, but any time there was too much white on the screen, the video still lost sync. Plugging the sources directly into the TV solves this problem, but since I have a DVD player, a game console, etc, this was not acceptable. The way I resolved it was to (sadly?) buy an expensive component AV switch that can support the bandwidth without losing the signal.
I wound up spending the extra money on a Key Digital 4x1 component switch. It is much more expensive, but it works.

There are plenty of protect circuits in your receiver. Each chanel has one as well as dc protect and thermal protect etc etc. More than likely you have a blown channel that needs to be rebuilt.

Your unit is going into protect mode. More than likely because you have a bad channel. Take a DVM on diode check and test all off your outputs. Once you find the pair that is shorted, you will need to replace both outputs and all of the transistors in that circuit. You will also need to check your low ohm resistors in that circuit as well as your duel emmiter resistor.

You can hook as many subs as you like since the Onkyo only provides the Pre-Out Line Level to the amp(s) that drive it (them). I run two myself.

Bi-wiring is a personal choice and some swear by it while some of us swear at it in a modern home environment. The premise of bi-wiring is that your amps or crossover networks **** to start with so you have to do all this work-around.

My $.02 is you add complexity, waste speaker wire (which can be expensive if you subscribe to the theory that wire can change the sound other than at the cash register, but don't get me started on that), amplifier resources, and MAYBE you'll think you hear an improvement. Perhaps if you lived in an anechoic labratory you might. I think it's a crock.

My receiver say's "Protect" or turns on then off. What's wrong? Seven times out of ten it is a shorted speaker or speaker wire. To determine your exact problem, the first step is to disconnect all speaker wires "at your receiver" Next: Turn the receiver back on. If your receiver still says "protect" or turns off, it needs to be serviced. If your receiver stays on; reconnect your speakers one at a time and power back up after each speaker. You may find that after reconnecting all speaker wires it works! Most commonly the small braids of wire from the + to the - have touched and have caused the problem. Set it to ohms resistance and touch the speaker terminals, if there is a short internally the meter will read "1......" If it's an analog meter, it will peg to the right. There's your problem. Now, within any speaker there are quite a few possibilities as to what could be causing the problem. Most common is a blown coil and the speaker needs to be replaced. Some speakers have internal crossovers (usually floor standing speakers) and may have a shorted or burnt board (usually very visible brown burn marks on the board) and can possibly be repaired if your handy with a soldering iron. Now, if you disconnect the speaker wire at the speaker and it still says "protect" Check your wire for the obvious cut or nail thru the wire if possible. If your system has wiring that runs behind walls, you may need to use your meter again. Disconnect the wire at both ends, keep the ends separated, put your meter on ohms resistance and touch probes to the + and - wires at one side. If the meter pegs to the right or reads "1...." the wire is shorted and needs to be replaced or repaired at the short. Hope this helps.
