Make sure that you have the proper frequencies programmed into the scanner. For a comprehensive database of active frequencies in your area, visit:

If adjacent counties are using the same frequencies as your local services, there's no way to filter them out. If signals from the other counties are weaker than yours, adjusting the squelch might help, but that will also lower the scanner's sensitivity to the signals that you want.

It appears to be locked in "wired" mode.....how do
The best way to clear this glitch is to RESET the scanner to original factory settings, but beware -- this action with erase all data that you have programmed into the scanner. The scanner is useless if locked in the WIRED mode though, so I recommend the RESET.
- Power the scanner OFF
- Press and hold the 2, 9 and HOLD keys while you power the scanner ON
- The word CLEAr will appear after about 3 seconds. Do not power the scanner OFF until this message is gone from the display.

I NEVER HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY SCANNER UNTIL
Press the function key + the symbol that looks like an eye with cross hairs (signal stalker mode) and turn the function off. To set the options in signal stalker, press function + signal stalker for 2 seconds.
MY RADIOSHACK NASCAR PRO-84 SCANS
The NOAA weather frequencies have constant broadcasts, so your scanner "locks" onto them. The only ways to prevent this are to either delete the weather frequency or lock it out. To delete, just program the frequency "0.0" (zero point zero) into the channel. To lock it out, press the L/O key while on the weather freq.

How to program frequencies manually
To enter a known frequency into your scanner:
- Power the scanner ON
- Press HOLD
- Enter the number of the channel that you wish to program
- Press FUNC and PGM
- Enter the frequency, including the decimal point (e.g., 465.365)
- Press E to enter your data into memory

When i turn my pro-84 handheld scanner it says
Your scanner should not enter the WIRED mode unless you have a data cable attached, so you will need to RESET the unit to restore normal operation. To do this, power the scanner OFF, then press and hold the 2, 9, and HOLD keys and power it back on.
NOTE: The RESET will erase/delete all data that you've programmed into the scanner, but it's the only way to clear your problem.

How to program local frequencies?
Press the HOLD key, then enter the number where you want to store the frequency, then press FUNC + PGM, the channel number comes up, use the number keys and ./CLR to enter the frequency, including the decimal point you want to store, press E to enter the frequency into the channel ...You can get your frequency's at

Need to do a master reset on pro 84 sanner but don...
To RESET the PRO-84, turn the scanner OFF, then hold in the 2, 9 and HOLD keys and power the scanner ON. The word CLEAr will appear on the display to confirm the RESET.
While the manual for the PRO-84 has not been posted by Radio Shack, it is essentially a red PRO-83. You can download/print the 83 manual here:

Radio Shack has a manual for the PRO-83 scanner online in Pdf format. It worked great for me and I honsetly could not tell any difference in the PRO-83 and my PRO-84 !! It worked great for me and I had my scanner set up and working very quickly!! Hope this helps you all as much as it did me.. the manual is for the PRO-83 200 Channel compact scanner w/signal stalker search and lighted keypad.

Do you have a list of correct freq's for your area?
Make sure you have the scanner set on the correct mode (am/fm/ct/dc) for the freq's you have programmed. Each area of the country have their own individual freq. so their not stepping on each others transmission.
