I called the manufacturer and realized I was using the wrong type of recordable DVD disc to dub to. Non copy protected VHS tapes dub just fine as long as I'm using the proper disc.

There are any number of reasons why it won't play. The loading basket is jammed, the video tape has got tangled up in the mechanical section of the vcr or the loading gears are stripped. Unplug machine and remove top, [screws side and back] if the tape is spewed carefully remove by cutting it and clean tape particles, for any other problem have a technician check it out.

what I would do is play the vhs tape for a bit then rewind and press the dub botton only and see what happens. if nada then insert a new blank dvd and make sure its formated.

Try playing on another device, more like a blurayplayer . You can also try bringing to like a walmart, walgreens or a staples to see if they can play it from their side of things. Your DVD recorder is set on DVD-3 remote option, check DVD Recorder remote lower section for DVD Mode button that has 3 options, set it on DVD-3 and recorder will start responding on your commands of remote.
