garage door opens by itself

I have come home now a couple of times to find my garage door opened by itself. It was closed when I left the house. Am I on a similar frequency to my neighbors? or is something shorting?

From Chamberlain's website:

There are a few different things that can cause this type of problem.

  1. Look at the LED light next to the SMART/LEARN button on the motor unit. If you are facing the garage door, the SMART/LEARN button is located on the rear end or right hand side panel of the motor unit. You may need to remove a light lens cover in order to see it. This button is either purple, red/orange, green, yellow, grey, or white in color. If the light is flashing rapidly this means you have a stuck button on one of your remote controls. Take the batteries out of each remote control. When you remove the batteries from the bad remote, the light will stop flashing. This remote needs to be replaced.
  2. If one of your neighbor's remote controls is inadvertently programmed into your receiver, your door will open when their remote is activated. If this happens you will need to clear out your receiver and reprogram your remote controls:
    1. Press and hold the LEARN button for six seconds, or until you see the small LED light near the button turn itself off.
    2. If the above steps have been followed and the symptoms continue, there may be an electronic short in either the wall control button or the receiver logic board. In this case, remove the wall control wires from terminals one and two (or red and white) on the motor unit. Should the symptoms persist after the wires are removed, replace the receiver logic board. If the symptoms stop with the wall control wires removed from the motor unit, replace the wall control button, and the wires leading to the wall control button.

Garage Door Remote Not Working Consistently

We are having an issue with a Sears Craftsmen Garage door opener where the remote will only work either very close to the house or intermittantly at a distance. We have changed batteries, re-"learned" the remotes by resetting the codes and by trying a different remote. One of the safety sensors is showing a yellow light but it is in line with the other remote. The garage door opener is working fine from the manual button.

The little button with a padlock on the wall control is a "vacation" lockout feature that disables the remotes. There should be a small LED on the wall control that is always on steady. When the padlock button is pressed and released the LED should be constantly blinking (indicating the vacation lockout mode is active) and your remotes should be disabled. The wall control will still operate the door. Pushing the padlock button again should make the LED stop blinking and restore the door to normal operation.

sears craftsman 1/2 hp garage door troubleshooting

Our garage door is not opening with the wall unit or remotes. When I push the wall unit I hear a click from the ceiling unit. The door operates fine manually. The green light on the ceiling unit (the SRT button I believe) keeps blinking periodically. The wall unit has a green light that is lit (not blinking). I've tried holding the SRT button since it appears it needs reset somehow but that hasn't worked. Any suggestions?

You must have a wired keypad. To program the keypad, first unplug the garage door opener from the electrical outlet. Next, remove the nameplate from the console that the keypad plugs into and locate the program/operate switch. Flip the switch to program. Next, enter your desired four-digit PIN number into the keypad. Slide the switch back to operate and plug the garage door opener back in. The keypad should be programmed.

Lightning loves logic boards. You can remove the board and check for missing traces on the printed circuit. Unfortunately this is fairly common.
