One easy trick is to change the default IP 192.168.0.1 to something else in addition to password protecting the login to the modem. Make sure you save the new IP address.

You shouild also have wfi but the wifi will not give you internet because it is disconnected from the modem. The Dlink has to be connected to the modem but it will also need to be configured.
