My guess is that something "bad" happened (electrical surge???) when you first disconnected it.
Your only option is to assume that the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the casing has failed. So, open the case, remove the disk-drive, and connect the disk-drive to another computer, and see if the drive itself is still "readable". If so, copy all the files, onto the other computer, or burn some DVD disks.
I need the installation disc for Maxtor
There is no such thing as an installation disk for a HDD,, The onl installation disk is for your Mobo,, try to identify your mobo if it is a MSI or PCI and find the appropriate disk for it,,, any HDD will work on any mobo as long as you have an ins disk on your mobo,,,,
Cannot install on my computer
Just go to their website and look under "support". Find you model and you can download the drivers for it. Maxtor has become Seagate but they still support Maxtor. Here is the website link you need. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/

Also check your hard drive in another computer change usb cable then try.
If in another computer your hard drive works then connect your hard drive to your computer then when you power up the computer press F8 key then enter in safe mode.
Then uninstall all usb drivers from device manager. For gert device manager right click on my computer then click on property then hardware->device manager.
Also try in different usb ports .If your hard drive also not recognize in other computer then it need repairing.

yeakis..!!..
itz probably not normal anymore..it do
happen while boot up or when hdd gets power..hdd consists of one or
more solid n heavy platter(s) like gramophone media/disk in miniature,
which is spinning at more than 7200+ rpm just on a single pivot which is
thick just around a dot pen's nib..there is one lens each on both side
of the platter of abt 1mm probably..and the whole assembly do function
somewhat alike gramophone....
nw u cn understand how highly balanced
they r..due to time, illegal shut down, moving/shacking/thud/shock to the hdd while in
activity, may cause damage to it..and the first n common
symptom is either no activity or 'ticking' noise (like 'tuk tuk' or 'kirr kirr')..!!
do claim warranty..report as hdd dead..don't tell itz physically damaged..
try contacting ur system admin/vendor without delay....

Hi Jim
No drivers needed.
You may have difficulty though depending on the age of your mac. Earlier models only had USB1 and they can be problematical with USB 2 drive cases.
