Can't read HD-- I/O error
"Joecolvette" has probably got it right, I've seen this before. The HDD enclosure circuit board has a fault. Can be resolved by replacing the enclosure. Plenty on ebay, just ensure you buy one with the correct HDD interface (Sata or IDE).Alternatively, if you have a tower with a spare port, you could take the HDD out of the caddy, install it in the tower as a "Slave" (check jumper settings) ensuring the system drive is set to "Master". Then you can check whether the HDD itself is at fault.
Maxtor STM380215A 80 GB pata external hard drive not recognized by xp
The thing is the missing drivers..They may be made not to use a driver and be recognized directly in some operation systems..but if you have a windows xp sp1..(home edition ) ..it will not work so well in what matter the drivers for devices..My advice is to reinstall teh windows and use a windows xp sp3 ..if your computer can not handle the windows 7 one ..and will work ..Or ..look over the internet and try to locate the driver needed for this hard disk .and install it ...IUt is probably a generic driver , but just missing from your system .Another issue may be the port used..Not all usb ports work or have power ..or just be a 1.0 port that will not support the plugged device ..try to use another port and see if it works .usually these hard disks are on 3.0 usb ..now a days
Maxtor 180G One Touch can't
Then it has died - hardware malfunction. To see if the problem is in the case board or the hard disk just crack open the case, extract the hard disk, put it directly in a desktop pc and see if it's recognized - if it is then you can recover your files and put the disk in a new case - $20 at almost all pc shops.

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seatedif this fails to fix the problem you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap hope this helps
My external got knocked over
Hello there, external drives simply consist of sata hard drives. First the data on your external is still intact as i assume that the drive has not crashed but the casing is condemned. Simply open up the casing and get a replacement sata drive casing you can always get one from any computer shop or order one online from any of numerous computer shops online and put the hard disc inside the new casing. If this is properly done all your information will still be intact.
Hope this support has been helpful?

After connecting usbs, maxtor drive
Make sure you are connecting to a usb port directly on your pc and not through a usb hub. If that does not work try another usb port on the back of your pc. Also make sure the power supply to the hard drive is working. If that fails try looking for the drive in "My Computer or Computer" and if not there check in "disk management". Also try disconnecting all other usb devices except your keyboard and mouse reboot and then try connecting the maxtor drive.

I'm not sure if this is the right thing but here go:
LinkSpare parts for components are very rare to find, even on eBay. Official companies will not sell them so they can only come from taking apart an already working HDD.
I have a maxtor ont
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your "((MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE))" make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error even something as small as a faulty electrical extension or fan lead can cause this problem hope this helps
