if its not the C/: and isn't an external drive then as a secondary drive it has become coprrupt with its signing to windows because of it booting up with windows , right click on it and reformat it or use something like Maxblast or Acronis to boot it up and if that works then you can remove any content to reformat it just check to see if content needs to be removed before reformatting.
KEEP GETTING AN ERROR MESSAGE
number one reason for HDD failure is HDDs were made only
for the actual data storage , there is only one type of failure
on an HDD and that is the image that is placed on the HDD
by the RAM becomes corrupt , any and all other errors come

never works because the firmware of the HDD is grossly out
of date , they pretty much come new out of the box with
out of date software .

If your external HDD was used on a windows machine, it was probably formatted in the NTFS file format. Mac uses Fat32. The entire HDD has to be formatted to Fat32 for the Mac system to use.
Gets flashing light on start
danw, i'd like to ask more about this, since I seem to have something similar on my maxtor onetouch 3 - seems to have happened during a storm, so I think a power surge killed the power supply, and I don't think there was any actual disk/plate failure.
1. power on - the light just flickers for a while, then goes out.
2. the light on the power adapter is on, indicating that it works, but when I turn on the drive, the light on the adapter flickers, too.
does this sound like the symptoms you were seeing?
I don't want to take any chances with the amount of data I have on this 160GB drive...
Thanks,
Geoff
Maxtor One Touch
The harddrive itself has gone bad, only solution would be to replace the HDD inside the enclosure :-( sorry.
Maxtor OneTouch II external drive
You don't really need software to connect to USB hard drives...if its in device manager but not My comp....windows prolly could not decide on a drive letter to assign it....a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i taken etc...usually this comes from those all-in-one camera card readers...gimme a little feedback on this and we'll see if we can help.
Maxtor External Hard Drive No Power
I assume it is a USB connection? Does it also have a power adaptor or a USB dongle that has 2 USB connectors? If you cannot get it to power up, the only other option to retrieve your data is to take the HD out of the case and connect it to a PC or laptop using a SSD or SATA to USB adapter and see if you can get the PC to recognize it.
