classic 2007 failures old PC ran for 7 years and died as most did, all do really at 7, or nearly... the cause is 3 fold. (1,2,3) Besides kids playing bad. 1: bad RTC coin 2: bad HDD (we run smart test on it prove this is 15 seconds work) 3: infected OS HDD, 7y is max life on RTC coin cell , 6 steps in free manual page 72 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02834030.pdf there it is and sold at wal-mart exit lane 15, for a buck $1 USD cr2032 if you'd looked in bios. the hdd is missing in boot order or not there, RTC coin dead, is first but most of these old laptops the HDD can in fact fail hard at only 5 years old. What function key gives entry to cmos

BIOS is fixed program that starts up the computer. BIOS is initialized during start up of HP Compaq-6715B which sets the computer settings to be uploaded. BIOS enables the creation of a bootable diskette, CD, or USB key that can be used to locally restore or upgrade the System BIOS in the supported notebook models with a 68YTT Family ROM. Only insert the USB drive that will be used to format and create bootable BIOS upgraded USB media. However, you should remove all unused USB drives and flash drives from the notebook before. In order to ROM family and ROM date, press F10 on the target notebook during startup to run the setup utility.

The tips to get into the BIOS of HP Compaq-6715b are:

  • Press F2 for setup
  • Shows logo
  • Independent of OS
Press F2 for setup

BIOS often has a blue background, and uses the arrow keys, PageUp, PageDown and enter keys to change the settings. After you have got into or accessed the BIOS, you can change the boot order settings so that the floppy disk is checked first to see if it contains a bootable program. Usually a message will appear telling you how to enter the BIOS setup program as the computer starts up, such as Press F2 for Setup.Shows logo

Your HP Compaq-6715b might be configured to show your computer's logo instead of important BIOS messages. In this case, you can press Esc or Tab while the logo screen is visible. If you are facing problems pressing the pause button in time, turn on your computer with your keyboard unplugged. In this situation you will receive a keyboard error, which helps you in pausing the startup process long enough for you to see the keys necessary to enter BIOS.Independent of OS

The PCs with both PS/2 and USB connections are configured to only allow USB input after the POST. If you are using a USB keyboard, it could be impossible to access BIOS. You would need to connect an older PS/2 keyboard to your PC to access BIOS. The BIOS accessing is independent of any Operating System on your computer because the BIOS is part of your motherboard hardware.http://www.bostonrecycling.net/

My laptop askes for a Power On password

I had same issue. Called HP and they told me it wasn't covered under warranty (even though my laptop is still under warranty). They gave me a number to a local shop. I called the local shop and they told me they did not work on laptops! What a joke! Anywhoo, this laptop has gone through 2 HDD in about a year's time. Don't know if something is up with the power supply board maybe? Anywhoo...enough ranting. Here's what I did to clear up the issue:

Turn the laptop off.

Take the battery out.

There are 3 screws holding the laptop keyboard. Two of them are marked on the back and one is inside the memory/wifi card compartment. Take off the cover and there will be a screw on the left side (if you have the front of the laptop towards you).

Flip the laptop back right side up. Unlock the tabs that secure the keyboard in place by sliding them down. There should be 4 of them in between the F-keys. Lift the keyboard from the top, towards you. CAREFULLY. There is a ribbon cable that attaches the keyboard. Slide both little tabs up away from you on the side of the connector and slide the ribbon cable up.

The RTC battery should be right there. Slide it down and slightly to the left and it should pop right out. Wait about 10 minutes.

Plug the keyboard back in and plug in the AC adapter. Turn your laptop on. It should boot right up.

Don't know why this password got set on my laptop since I did not do it. I thought it was pretty sorry of HP to tell me that they don't cover this type of error even though I could prove that the laptop is legally mine.

You should also look into setting up a USB drive to be able to boot up some sort of Linux OS from it. (I use Ubuntu 9.10) Since Linux is not prone to viruses and .dll file issues like Windows. In fact, I'm writing this solution on FireFox browser using Ubuntu from my USB drive, while waiting for my new HDD to come in from HP. It's saved me on a few occasions. Another plus to doing this is that you can also scan the Windows folder on your HDD from Ubuntu to check for any viruses that are preventing Windows from booting up. Since you don't have to install it on your HDD, you're not affecting anything on your Windows partition.

Keyboard

You want to replace that keyboard? If so, I suggest you take it out and look at the bottom to see what the part number is. If NOT, then just google the 6715B Keyboard and purchase one that looks like the one you want.

(so is distraction to what it is)the real name of the Laptop is and was Presario CQ61 laptop CQ61 the PC has bottom sticker that shows the real names of PCs.CQ61-219TU is real name of on CQ61, there area many different sub codes, and they are not all the same.CQ61-306AX this had CCFL (cold cathode florecent lamps) that love to fail 3 waysdead, blinks ,dime or yellow = white.was made until 2009 and evolved, to LED backlamps.-410 is CCFLI will answer for CCFL as those just love to fail, but the the test is so easynow the answer for ANY laptop this old. 2007 and older. black screen all the time, and BIOS screens dead, answers only me. here. remove the main battery (large) it simply snaps off the bottom.the power pack is next we run the PC on your power pack AC to DC it must make the screen glow with something, do not use the wrong pack as in mixed up with others.now the lap top seems on, even the fan blows, LED glowpoint a flash lamp at the screen ,dark' room , and of you see any kind of LCD data on the screenthe CCFL lamp below #1 is bad.this is phase 1 testing, as other things can fail too. The keyword below is Mercurythis tells me it is those pesky CCFL glow tubes. 2007 is the year some PC went to LED back lamps. yes I was correct the service manual I did find proves they made both lamp types ccfl-hp07-psnmcz4s4yabbrmds04n13cd-d-0.jpg
