My WD 500GB My book (world edition) keeps going offline

My WD My Book (world Edition) only stays online for less than a day. It is only a month and a half old. To get it to be recognized by the Mionet software (WD's newly aquired company)I must power it down and then back up. When I go to access it later in the night, it is again offline. I have emailed WD twice and have NEVER gotten a reply (Over 1.5 weeks) Thank you

Can't access my share folders

I go thru the windows explorer and type \\mybookworld and see all the share folders I already created, but when I try to enter to one of them the system show me the following popup message:

\\mybookworld\(my folder)is not accessible. You may have not permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The network name cannot be found.

But, if a create a new folder the hard drive allow me to enter to it. It's looks like the older folders are corrupted or something like that.

I also notice that the general information of the drive like the size, free and used is no longer available. And in the Drive management tab is only showing Safely remove usb drive.

Drive management show only safely remove usb drive.
When u use mionet software it map the share to a drive letter. If u create folder or files on that drive u dont have permission to chance those files or folders on \\mybookworld.
Solution, dont use mionet software.

How to reset the username, password, and network settings of a WD My Book World Edition hard drive. trnsp.gif Answer The directions below detail how to reset the username and password (for the Shared Storage Manager utility), and network settings of a WD My Book World Edition hard drive by using the recovery button on the back of the unit.

  • The username will be changed to "admin"
  • The password will be changed to "123456"
  • The network settings will be changed to DHCP (obtain an IP address automatically).

    1. Please ensure that the WD My Book World Edition hard drive is turned off and all cables are disconnected from the unit.

    2. Insert a paperclip or narrow tipped pen into the recovery slot on the back of the unit. Press and hold down the recovery button.

On a USB hard drive when trying to "safely remove hardware"

Can anyone give a true way to determine why this happens... I have gone thru many answers including checking which processes may have a lock on the drive. None seem to have it... Not explorer, not recycle bin (config), not indexing, etc....
It seems to happen more when you have a NTFS hard drive than when you have a FAT32 hard drive.

Please only respond if you know what it is... No guesses

Right click on Recycle Bin then select Properties.
At the Global tab, select "Configure drives independently".
In each Drive tab check "Do not moves files to Recycle Bin...".
For Each Drive, find "Recycle" directory with Windows Explorer, then right click properties , uncheck read only, apply, click ok,click ok for subdirectories.
Right click the "recycle " directory and Delete.

WD MyBook World Edition 500GB Model: WD5000G032

Got this product over 6 months ago. Set up, works with no problems. A month or two ago = problems. I ran the drive constantly on in a ventilated area the whole time. Now, starts up fine, stays up for a while, then flashing blue light and no access to it. I turn it off, unplug it, then turn it back on and the blue light does not come on. Let it sit for a day or so. Turn on, blue light will be on for a while can access it, then kaput, same issue, flashing blue light. Why after six or so months issues when no changes have been made? Why will it kaput with a flashing blue light now? Mionet seems to be fine as it operates as it did, it just can't find the drive because it is flashing the blue light and not running properly. Why will it not work!!!!! UGGGGGHGHHHHHHH!!! And WD tech support is worthless. Please help! I don't know that much about pc stuff to figure out what is wrong.

I had the same problem as everyone else here - blue rings go out and then - nothing.  I called WD's data recovery partners and got quotes from $700-$1500 to recover the data because it is a network device!  Thanks Kellydam for the first clue.  I took my MyBook apart (start with rubber seal around the edges, then "unhook" it top and bottom on front of device by inserting a flat tip screwdriver through middle slot).  I purchased a Gigaware SATA enclosure and pluged it in to my computer.  Nothing.  I didn't get access to my files until I used Explore2fs to view the ext3 file system.

Replacing HDD's on WD MyBook World II won't format

I have a WD My Book World Edition II dual drive unit (2x500Gb WD's). I want to use it with newer 1.5Tb HDD's (Seagate's)but it won't recognize them. Once formatted via either Windows XP or DOS, still don't recognize them and sometime the unit will not even power up. I viewed the contents of the original drives and there were multiple partitions on them which I can't recreate. I have even formatted the original 500Gb HDD's and now they aren't recognized. How can I format the new or old drives for the unit to recognize them for what they are? Is there perhaps a firmware limitation with the unit to only allow 2x500Gb or combined 1Tb? I can't find any information to this extent anywhere on the net, thus far. Thanks!

I was attempting something similiar -- replacing my World Edition II 500GB drives with 1TB drives. My research unearthed two things... These units will only work with Western Digital Caviar Green drives. The blue ring won't light if other drives are installed. I also read (in a couple spots) that the unit's O/S is stored on the hard drive (as opposed to be stored in Flash memory). If this is true, you would need to image the old drive to the new (using a tool like Ghost or True Image), and increase the partition size as part of the imaging process. I don't know if this would work, as I opted to not proceed with the upgrade. For me, the new version of the World Edition II (WDH2NC20000 and WDH2NC40000) turned out to be a better option than upgrading. These units provdide the extra space and are MUCH faster than the old ones.

Two people above are retarded. It's a well known issue that M$ is too lazy to fix. Technically , closing programs that are using files/folders on the usb should work, but 99% of the time it doesnt work. Your best bet is to shut down windows, then unplug the usb device .

cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

HI i have a WD 500Gb hd .i cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB from the computer to the external 500gb hd .it says not enough free disk space. i have 200 gb free. i tried doing disk cleanup .why is this happening? .what is the solution ?

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.
