not sure whether its a problem with the drive or a problem with windows media player. Take a can of air and blow some onto the laser of the dvd drive, this will make sure that there is no dirt or dust on the laser.

Once you do that put the dvd back into the drive. Give it about 20-30 seconds and then see if it tries to pull up the movie if it does and your getting errors from windows media player then we know that the drive is working cause its seeing the movie properly.

At that point, I would suggest downloading the latest version of windows media player.

After doing that and installing it, try playing your movie again, in fact try several movies just to make sure. Windows Media player may want to download Codecs, if it does then let it. This will allow it to recognize dvds better and quicker.

If the codecs are updated and you still can't get it to see and play movies then I would suggest using a different dvd player such as Cyberlink PowerDVD located on this page:

check power lead pluse battery,or it could of over heated check the fan and clean if needed.

try doing a full clean up using disc clean up and defrag,

in xp type msconfig in run box you will get ms config in start up tab check for your pop up app in list and un check also search in services tab but below list check the hide microsoft services and apply go in windows 7 : start up is in task manager open task manager go to start up tab right click on app and disable it but services is is msconfig

As ur sister has a branded machine u must hav got a Operating System CD-ROM with it for backup.(in ur case it must be vista)

if u hav the cdrom then turn ur system on just put the cdrom into the drive and let it do what follows.
It may ask u abt where to install ur OS(means which partition)
just select the desired partition and many other simple questions which u can easily answer incase u hav any problem I am always there.

It is not uncommon for the AC adapter to stop working, start with that.If you still do not have any action via the power button, the power supply is most likely the cause. Do you have any lights being displayed when the unit is plugged in? Is there a sequence of flashing lights? Is there an audible tone?More information is required to troubleshoot this issue but I would first check the hardware. If you have access to a Multimeter, then you can perform voltage checks yourself.

Can you elaborate a little bit more, can you see the bios of the system when it powers up?

This is may be due to unsynchronization of power so you may put the batteries out and put in after two hour and plug in again if problem not solved then there is problem in batteries Jack so u may replace it and problem may solved and this problem mostly come in HP laptops
