I've just bought an e280 version 2 and can get my computer (running XP pro service pack 2 with WMP 10) to recognize it as a drive only by using the "secret handshake". The device manager shows a driver error next to the device but will not install the MTP driver from the installation CD.
I've had driver problems with other MP3 players ever since I installed a microsoft lifecam webcam so it might be something to do with that, or it may be a coincidence.
I'm also having trouble syncing in WMP - some tracks work fine, some tracks give the error "The server threw an exception". There doesn't seem to be any logic to which files will sync and which won't - for example different tracks on the same album will sync or not sync.
Thanks
As I like MTP mode a lot better than MSC (I can use WinAmp to sync and it doesn't have to restart and refresh its database after disconnecting) I didn't like a lot of the solutions to this and similar problems telling to go to MSC mode.
However, I was able to go into Device Manager (right click on My Computer, click Properties, select "Hardware" tab, click Device Manager) and find the Portable Devices sublist, right click on "Sansa e280" (it had a yellow exclamation point on it) and click install driver. I followed this through, selecting automatic installation for the driver, and presto! Sansa is installed and ready to go. I actually had Windows Media Player open during this process, and while it wouldn't recognize it before, after doing this process, I went back to WMP and it had already found it and was trying to get me to sync it. So if you like MTP, try this. It worked for me.
(Note: this method may not work, unless you tried to plug the player in and it told you that there was an error in setting up the device. My problem was that I had installed WMP 11, but had not done the final "setup" process. After I had run WMP 11 for the first time, I was able to do this successfully).

My sansa 8gig player is not responding to any buttons being pushed. It is not on the hold button but the button seems loose compared to my husbands player's hold button?? I was plugging it intto mini speakers (made for mp3players which I've used before with it), this time I also tried to save the charge by plugging the charger into the wall so the battery didn't run low. That's when it seemed to freeze up. Any suggestions? It is a refurbed player so anything's possible I suppose,
The hold button or "overloading" it with the charger and speakers are my only two ideas of what might have went awry.I just want it fixed!
Thanx
I had the same freeze problem and after doing everything I could think of I read the downloaded user manual and found the answer was to hold down the menu button for 15 seconds. It acts as a power off button and cancels out the last operation thereby unfreezing the offending action.

Hello,
I’ve got a major problem with my
Sansa e280R and wondering if someone could please help me. I bought my player in
Canada, but am working in Africa for the next year, so I don’t have a way to
return it to the store. So I’m willing to try anything…
The problem:
I switch on the
device. After about 5 seconds of the usual “Sansa” start-up screen, I get an
error message that says “Load main image failed Switch to recover mode”.
What I tried:
1) I tried starting
it in recovery mode and then dragging in (into the 16 MB folder) a copy of the
newest
firmware, which I downloaded from the Sansa website. After ejecting the device,
it says a few things on the device screen, including “Upgrade finished
resetting the system”, after which it goes to the back to the main error
message “Load main image failed…” I tried this both 5 times.
2) I tried 1) above
again, but also simultaneously dragging in a blank Notepad document called
“Sansa.fmt”. When I do this it spends a few formatting, and then does the same
thing as in 1). I tried all this about 5 times too.
3) I then downloaded
the Sandisk Connect Recover Tool from the Sandisk site and tried to run the program. However, the
program gives me the message: “ERROR! Application failed to read the version
details”.
4) I then cursed
repeatedly and then posted this thread…
Thanks very kindly for
any help you can provide me. I depend very much on my music here, so any help
to get it going again is very appreciated…
Try this;
Please copy and paste the following links into your web browser address bar, and then click Go or hit your Enter key. When prompted, choose the option to Save the file to your desktop.
http://rapidshare.com/files/67740209/rhapsody-1.0.2.21.zip
and
http://rapidshare.com/files/67740700/sansa.rar
1. Double click on My Computer so that you can see it on your screen.
2. Turn the player off.
3. On the top of the player is a Hold switch, move it to the right (toward the headphone jack) so you see the orange colour.
4. On the left hand side of the player is a Record button, press and hold it while connecting the player to the computer. Continue holding the Record button until you see a new icon under "My Computer" called "16MB FORMAT". Once you see that icon you may release the Record button.
5. Double click the RHAPSODY-1.0.1.47 file you downloaded earlier and open it. You will need WinZIP or WINRAR to "unpack" it. Inside you will see a file named PP5022.mi4 drag this file onto the 16MB Format in My Computer mentioned before.
6. Double Click on the Sansa.rar and open it. Drag the Sansa.fmt file into the 16MB Format as well (this forces the device format and erase all data)
6. Disconnect the player and look at the screen. Several things will be displayed, and when you see Key Lock, System Shutdown, move the Hold switch on the top back to the left.
7. Turn the player on and watch the screen. If you see a Refresh Database Fail error, you will need to follow steps 1-7 again until you do not get the error. If it does not work the first time, it could take up to 3 times for it to work.
Please RATE my solution at the bottom.
Best of Luck.

Ok, I tried to turn on my Sansa e280 8GB mp3 player the other day and it came up with the screen "Key Locked" and following that it said "System Shutdown". I posted another problem like this and somebody told me to put it into recovery mode, which i did. In recovery mode it says "Welcome to Recovery Mode" then "Please connect USB Cable". So i plug it in and it says "Enter USB2.0 MSD mode" and a folder named 16MB-FORMAT (E:) popped up. Inside it has a Text Document named VERSION. What do I do now to get my Sansa to stop saying Key Locked System Shutdown.
Sounds to me like your hold switch is on. Have you tried sliding your hold switch on top of the player, next to the headphones jack to the off position?
