try this: remove battery. plug laptop using the ac adapter, turn laptop on and slide the battery in.

there should be a speaker icon on the disktop click on that and make sure there is nothing muted.

I seriously doubt there is anything failing in the laptop. Check all sound properties for any mute effects. some laptops have a mute button on the keyboard or by the keyboard just so your aware of that also.

You just have to select the Operating System before you download the driver.

normally for laptops just view your left or right side part of the laptop to view the sound connections if you will look at it closely you can see a picture that looks like a headset that is were you can connect the sound while the other connection is for the microphone.
