its sounds to me if the laptop keeps shutting itself down its because you are having overheat issues you may have a bad fan or heat sink which prevents the laptop from cooling itself if it is new you should take it back if not you may want to have it sent in for repair! hope this helps!

bios needs resetting and a new os needs to be installed 

Make sure that the operating System on the recovery CDs is the same as the one on your computer.
If you are trying to recover from a CD with Vista and your computer operating system is Win-XP that will not work.

Other Thing may be you had a hidden partition and some how you over written it or it is damaged.
check the hard disk partition stat.

check if any firewall is blockin the download

Restart pc and opt for start windows normally.Sometimes a hard reset is required which means press and hold power off button.

If the IT guy does not want to do this favor for a former colleague, go to the immediate supervisor and so on up the hierarchical ladder of the company. If you are persuasive enough, you may not have to reach the chairman of the board to get a redress.

You can also buy a retail OS or one of the free Linux distributions and install it.
