Unless you have a lens collimator and other equipment, do not try to take the lens apart yourself. Take the lens in to a reputable camera shop and have their repair department do a CLA (clean-lube-adjust) on the lens.

My d80 wont take pictures in auto,P,S or A modes.
The camera will not take a picture in P, S, or A if the camera is in Auto Focus mode - and is unable to focus. Make sure that the Auto / Manual focus switch on the camera body AND the lens are BOTH in an Auto Focus mode. A tip off would be that you do not hear the lens focus motor running while trying to find focus. If you do hear the focus motor, you may not have sufficient light on the subject for the camera to find a contrast "edge". In this case, the focus motor will hunt from where ever it is all the way in one direction, and then all the way in the other - trying to find focus. You'll need to provide more light or if you have the focus assist lamp (on the front of the camera) enabled - make sure your fingers are not blocking it while 1/2 pressing the shutter. You can take pictures "all day long" in Manual Focus mode regardless of whether the subject is in focus or not. The lower left corner has a green circle or disc that indicates proper focus. Otherwise, a green triangle shape will be visible close by.More info on Focus is available
here. I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply. Thanks.

You're apparently using a lens with an aperture ring. Turn the ring to its smallest opening (largest f/number). You can control the aperture from the camera body, the same way as on a lens without an aperture ring.If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post specifying the lens(es) you're using.

Nikon 18-200 autofocus lens won't
OK I just fixed it, thanks to Ken Rockwell.com who says:
"Once in a blue moon my Nikon 18-200mm won't focus on my D200. Manual focus works fine, but the lens won't autofocus no matter what I do. It's annoying!
Of course the camera needs to be pointed at something with contrast, lines or texture. Point it at the sky and nothing autofocuses. That's normal.
One time this was so bad I thought for sure I was going to have to send my lens in for service, since nothing would get it to go.
Then I discovered the problem: I had knocked the AF switch on my D200 to M. This switch is easy to knock and I had forgotten to check the obvious. There also is a switch on the lens which is not easy to knock, but I have left the lens set to M shooting at night, and I forgot to return it to A/M the next morning.
This fixes most of my problems.
Rarer is when the lens honestly won't focus. When this happens I turn the camera off and on. If this doesn't fix it, turn the camera off, press the lens release button and rotate the lens back and fourth a couple of times. This will clear any dust off the electrical contacts and focus returns."

How can i operate video
The D80 doesn't have video capabilities. Nikon introduced video capabilities with the subsequent D90.
Sorry if that wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way this camera is.

Does your lens have a diafragm ring, A ring with numbers on it like 22 16 11 8 5.6 3.5. Set this ring to the maximum. I hope this helps.

Turn the aperture ring to its smallest setting (largest f/number). You control the aperture from the camera body, as on a lens without an aperture ring. Turn the mode dial to M (manual). The camera's exposure meter will not work with this lens. You can use another lens to get an approximate exposure, or take pictures and review them and/or use the histogram to fine-tune the exposure. The camera won't autofocus, of course, but the in-focus indicator in the viewfinder will still light up to indicate proper focus.

Apparently there was something seriously wrong with your camera, which has now fixed itself. Nikon didn't put the LiveView feature into the their DSLRs until the D3 and the D300, which were released after the D80. The more recent D90 has this feature, but not the D80.

Error message on my Nikon D80
I have the same message r07 on the same camera & lens combination. It is an lens error message that the lense will not focus. You can manually focus the lens in the auto mode and the camera will allow you to take a picture. I have been told it is the MR unit and cost of repair around $135.

It's possible that you need to format the memory card. Formatting is found in the camera set up menu scroll down to "Format Memory Card" and follow on screen instructions.
Formatting should be done after each time you download pictures to your computer. Not delete, as delete does leave some data behind and eventually clogs the memory card so new data can not be placed on it. Another possibility is that the card somehow has become locked I'll include a diagram. Also a new card needs to be formatted to the camera
it is going to be used in.

Err with f4 and r11 display
If your lens has an aperture ring, do note that most of these lenses require the ring to be locked at a certain position for it to work. In the course of using the lens, you may have accidentally unlocked the aperture ring and moved it out of position. This is a common problem.
To fix this error, try this:
1. Turn off camera
2. Turn the aperture ring clockwise and then lock it
3. Turn on the camera
If you still encounter the same problem, repeat the same steps but turn the aperture ring counter-clockwise. Hope this helps.

I receive a Err on
Hi Jeff - The manual describes "Err" as a general error, a "Camera malfunction"
and says "If error persists, consult with Nikon-authorized service
representative." (Bottom of page 132 in the english version of the
manual.)
Some folks have had mixed results with removing / mounting the lens once or twice, charging the battery and cleaning the contacts of both the lens and camera body's lens opening. More odten than not though - the camera has to go back to Nikon for repair. it appears that the shutter is replaced and things go back to working just fine again.
I would
contact Nikon directly to learn if there are things they would like you to attempt before arranging for service of your D80.
I hope this helps and good luck. Please rate my reply. Thanks.

A black spot has appeared
If the spot is in the same location after changing lenses than I would say that you either have something on the sensor in the camera body behind the lens or the sensor has a dead pixel. You can first try cleaning the sensor. There are many products on the market to get this job done. Just in case you don't know, the sensor is located just behind the lens inside the camera body. Start with a few blasts of air from a bulb type cleaner such as the Giotto Rocket. This will blow off any large pieces of dust and might just be enough to fix the problem. If that doesn't work you can move on to specially made sensor brushes or sensor swabs. Be careful with the swabs as they can leave streaks on the sensor which are worse than the dust. If after all of this you still have a spot than I would say you have a dead pixel which will require maintenance (probably involving sensor replacement) from an authorized Nikon service center. Hope this helps!
