Frozen screen cant turn on

Hi! I've just finishing dealing with this on my Go720. Symptoms - freezes during startup and can not turn off.Tried resetting - but this only turns the unit off. When it tries to restart it still freezes during startup sequence. So - connected to PC and ran TomTom HOME2. I had backed the unit up only a few month previous, so I tried to do this. However, it threw an error on this procedure. I then thought that perhaps I could erase the memory contents and reinstall the contents of my backup folder. However, playing safe, I first wanted to do a dump of all my files on the units internal memory. Halfway through this I had an error message saying that one file was corrupt and could not be read. The file was clmdata. So ... after more researching the web I read that the file clmdata has been blamed for this freezing problem. I examined my Go720 internal memory and tried to overwrite the corrupt clmdata with the one from my backup set. That failed as the file was corrupt. In windows explorer then deleted the clmdata file but all this did was generate a file of 0 bytes with the original name. However, I now tried again to restore the unit with TomTom HOME, and this time it worked. Unit is fine now! From what I've read, you may not need to use the restore function, but just delete (or try to delete) the clmdata file, and the unit recreates it when it restarts. Best of luck!Jeremy

Frozen screen cannot reset

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
1 - SOFT RESET
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom
NAVIGON

MAGELLAN NEXTAR - does NOT offer any types of Firmware or map upgrades or repair services. Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase.

Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty.

Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure.

I hope this was helpful for you.

My tom tom.910 will not turn on, I have tried the

If you have an SD card in try removing that before you power up.

You may also want to try the hard reset.
Paper clip in the tiny hole by the card slot.

Push it in firmly whilst the unit is powered up (not too hard) for about 3 seconds then release
You may have to power down and then up again and even hold down the power button a little longer the first time you do this

Have tomtom 910 when switching

Several things could be the reason. The smallest problem is if it just needs formatting of the HDD - replacing software and maps. Maybe your HDD is dead by some reasons, or the ribbon cable, connecting the motherboard with the Mainboard is not propperly plugged in or just faulty. I would say the last option is the most possible, however hope it is the first.

My TomTom 910 still won't

  • To replace this battery is a tedious task in itself. It is one of the first things that goes into the GPS upon assembling. When you replaced the battery did you look at the charging unit inside the GPS unit. I will post some pictures for you that will show you the piece you need to look at and possibly replace. If you replaced the batty you should be able to get to the battery charger in the GPS because the battery replacement is far more in depth. Also there is no BNC connector, it's a just and RCA audio wire. So reassemble like you would have had to to change the battery and see if the charging unit on your TomTom is loose or see if it responds when moved a bit.

  • You will need a Torx bit number 6 for this job, start by removing the case, the four screws are located under the rubber pads on the devices base
ironfist109_102.jpg

  • The case "pod" simply removes leaving the device sat on the table

ironfist109_103.jpg

  • I remove the GPS Patch aerial for this as it makes the later stages a little easier, two torx number 6 screws and the daughter board will lift away from its multipole connector. The red line indicates the TomTom charging unit.

  • Four Torx number 6 screws secure the main board into position, remove these to release the PCB, disconnect the two plugs as shown in the picture below.

Replased battery in tom tom

Hi,

I will advice you reset the unit, this might help fix the abnormality with the black screen problem. follow these procedure to reset your tom tom gps.
Make sure your battery is charged before you begin. TomTom suggested allowing your device to charge for at least 2 hours before resetting it. Remove your device's SD card from the card slot.
Find the "Reset" pinhole button on the bottom of the device.
Hold the "Reset" button down for 10 to 15 seconds or until your device resets itself. You will need a flattened paperclip or another small metal object to reach inside the pinhole.
Power the TomTom back on and insert your SD Card. You have now reset your TomTom gps and this should fix the black screen problem.

Hi, I have a TomTom

Hello!

First remedy is to check if the battery is faulty. Charge the Tomtom GO 910 fully. Then, there is a small hole located under the the unit close to the connector that you can insert a needle or a paper clip to reset the 910.Take out the sd card for some time before putting it back. Turn on your unit and see if it response.

If nothing happens to the first remedy, then the problem is with the hdd of the 910. Replace the hard drive of your Tom-tom. It will be risky if you do it yourself, you might inflict further damage. It might also ask you for the activation code. But if you are willing to do it and you have the replacement hard drive, check the links below:

1. How to replace hdd of Tomtom GO 910

I can't turn it on!

I had the same exact problem with mine. The charger does not charge. There should be a green light that comes on when you plug it in. The green light is right by the plug. I have to wiggle the charger around to get it to make connection to get it to charge.

Installing battery in tom tom 910

Remove the rubber strips from the bottom of TT there are two screws each side.
The top of the unit will then come off easily.
Then you will see a cast iron casing the battery is buried deep in it.
To access battery remove the circular shaped circuit with two screws.
Then remove five screws around the main circuit board.
Then you will see the battery.
Then remove a sliver strip which holds the battery in place and the eject mechanism for the TT arm.
Now is the hard part the battery is wedged in so I took a large screwdriver and forced it out.
I did crack the casing a little but it was easy to knock it gently back into place.
Important when you put the battery back in you will have to apply a little pressure, then do not forget to place the eject button into the same pin hole that the sliver strip sits in.
Oh and connect battery.

Good luck
