i've take out the paper, but still cannot solve the problem
Don't know if it's the same problem i had but its maybe worth a try. My paper went in a little, the wheels were turning but it didn't take the rest of the paper or print.
Someone replied to my problem, i tried it and it fixed 1st time. Also seems to of worked for others
Solution:- Use a piece of thin card, a magazine cover is what i used, make sure its A4 size then try to print something, as the paper starts moving push it through! and hey presto it worked for me, everything printing fine now

I keep getting this same error e 5!!!
I have put in new cartridges (not refills)
I still get the same problem.
I tried all the suggestions on related to the MP160, but nothing has happened.
What I did notice was that when I do lift the top cover the cartridge carousel does not move to the cartridge release bay? Can this be a problem?
Thank you!

I've just bought a second hand MP160,which I only intended to used as a scanner.
I can't get the scanner to operate due to an E5 error on the display, and a 2,114,0 error which appears as a pop-up when I attempt to scan.
Although empty, the cartridges are of the correct type and are seated properly.
When I remove the cartridges completely the error codes do not change.
Is an empty cartridge enough to cause this issue?
Many thanks.
I got this Error 2,114,0 with my MP210 and none of the above fixes worked. This is how I have got it working again: Press and hold the maintenance (picure of spanner and screw driver) button and the reset button ( Inverted red triangle) together for five seconds or more. The flashing error code 1 and 6 will then stop flashing and replaced by a print copy no 1. The printer/scanner is reset and the scanner works.

any tricks to overcome this without buying new cartridges?
1) With the printer powered off but connected to a power source, press
the Power button while pressing and holding the Stop/ Reset button.
2) When the Power LED is lit, press the Stop/Reset button two times while pressing and holding the Power button.
3) When releasing the Power button and the Stop / Reset button
(regardless of order), the printer will move into a service mode.
(Waiting for menu selection)
4) When the LED lights in green, press the Stop/Reset button 4 times.
The above will get you to Service Mode (and clear the Waste Ink Counter if you wish) and is supposed to work for MP160 also.
Caution if your waste ink pad is full you could overflow if ignored.
Some of the new carts reportedly have fuses which blow if the ink gets too low, denying any further refilling.
To use refills, you will probably have to turn off your Status Monitor.
Go to your printer's Maintenance section.

Hi all! My trouble is the following: when I try to print or to make a copy, the paper goes through blank, then the next leaf, and then E3 appears. What do I have to do? Probably there is a problem with cartridge, or?
I work in a shop repairing these printers and have had a large number with the same fault - displaying E-3 with no jam in the paper path. This is caused by a broken part in the paper feed mechanism that pevents the printer from taking the paper. The part located right at the bottom of the printer looks like two white gears connected together with a central spring. At present I am trying to find a supplier of the spare parts - will check back.

I have followed your suggestion,by taking out the power cable for2/3 minutes, but it does not appeared to have worked.
The unplugging procedure is called hard reset, and is useful only when there is no real problem on the printer.
Error E5 means a problem with cartridge chipset, here follows reset procedure, it does not always work:
Error E5 is a problem with cartridge ink counter. This happens when you use refilled or not original crtridges.
Try removing cartridges and putting them back in place.
Here is the whole service procedure for Pixma, you must use this to reset the ink counter:
1) With the printer powered off but connected to a power source, press the Power button while pressing and holding
the Stop/ Reset button.
2) When the Power LED is lit, press the Stop/Reset button two times while pressing and holding the Power button.
3) When releasing the Power button and the Stop / Reset button (regardless of order), the printer will move into a
service mode. (Waiting for menu selection)
4) When the LED lights in green, press the Stop/Reset button the specified number of time(s) according to the
function listed in the table below.(Each time the Stop/Reset button is pressed, the LED lights alternately in
orange and green, starting with orange.)
The number of the Reset
button pressing
LED Function Remarks
0 time Green Power off
1 time Orange Service pattern print
2 times Green EEPROM print
3 times Orange EEPROM reset
4 times Green Waste ink counter reset See waste ink counter reset
procedures below.
5 times Orange Destination setting See Destination setting
procedures below.
6 times Green Print head deep cleaning
11 times Orange Button / LCD checking
12 or more times Returns to a menu selection
If
it does not work you will need to buy a new set of cartridges, possibly
original ones. If you just bought cartridges tell the seller they are faulty and ask an original set of cartridges as replacement.

How does one scan on canon mp160...manual doesn't explain this function...called Canon and technical exptert didn't know how to scan and told me to call Toshiba and ask them! [I have a Tosiba laptop]
I need step by step directions to scan...which the manual does NOT give.
Thank you very much.
You need MP navigator to scan your photos or documents. under support and software and drivers all u have to do is select your OS and then download MP navigator its under SOFTWARE on that same paqe ... GOOD LUCK http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=238&modelid=13368#DownloadDetailAct
