This sounds like a run motor issue and will require major disassembly to repair and can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and should be done by a qualified service technician.

How do you access the power switch in a Canon HV20

The entire side case assembly will need to be replace as the switch is not sold seperately and is not a repairable item. This can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and should be repaired by a qualified service technician.

The most likely cause for this is a damaged or defective flexible ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the camera body and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

In play mode the screen

I suggest clean the heads, then try to record to a new blank tape. If it works, you'll have to try another camera with those problem tapes. If it doesn't work, send the camera in for service.

Hi, I have a canon

This may be a dumb response, but is the camera receiving power? You can't open the cage without power, and if your battery is dead and the camera isn't plugged in, that could be the problem. My broadcast students make this error a lot.

Camera not detected-I have connected my Canon HV20

Hi!
When connecting a video camera to a computer in order to download the videos into it, you must use a video capturing software!
Such (FREE) software can be found here.

More recommended programs (not free...) are: Pinnacle Studio, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, and many more...

Good luck,
Pelu.

Connect via USB to see contents of the miniSD card. Connect via Firewire to do anything with recorded video/audio. USB setting may require further fooling around with camera settings to be visible on some computers, since the miniSD card should mount, just like a flash drive. I have one of these camcorders and this all works just fine.

Can't get the external wireless mic to record...

This camcorder will record audio from an external STEREO mic plugged into the top connector on the right side of the unit (under the plastic cover). I find it works EXTREMELY well with the various Sony microphones traditionally sold for MD recording (I use a mid-size one: model #ECMMS907). Some microphones may have too low an audio level for these camcorders. Other microphones may not have a stereo plug, but most of the ones that do (and have a high output level) should work You simply plug in the mic. No fussing with settings should be necessary. The camcorder has an onscreen audio meter that can be enabled. I leave it on all the time, so I am sure the external mic is working (mine has an on/off switch as well as an AA battery -- so I really want to make sure!).

Hello, I recently shot a student film on a Canon

This camera works fine with FCP 6. I use it all the time. You need to use the Easy Setup for Firewire basic HDV 1080/60i (or whatever sounds like that). The camera should be connected from it's small connector FIREWIRE port(under back panel cover -- USB port will not work for this use) to either a Firewire 400 or Firewire 800 port (auto-switches to 400Mbps if the device doesn't support 800) on the computer. Cables are available with a variety of connectors for this for under $20 ea (it's digital -- i.e. don't overspend on cables unless you have an actual problem!).
