Solution Performing the Hardware Test

1. Turn off the printer.
   


2. Press and hold the Paper Feed button.
   


3. While continuing to hold down the Paper Feed button, press the Power button ONCE.
   


4. When the Power button begins to flash rapidly, release the Paper Feed button. A test page will print.

Inkjet printers have the major disadvantage of having often having clogged print head cartridges that can be very annoying in the long run. Though advanced inkjets might possess their automatic print head cleaning process, this might not work every time. The problem might be because a layer of

Using a syringe and some alcohol to unblock the holes can be very effective.
Step 1: Remove the cartridge from the printer
Step 2: With the syringe, take in some alcohol and put in some drops in the tiny hole where the ink runs from the ink cartridge to the head of the printer.
Step 3: When done, put the cartridge (only where the tiny holes are found) in some warm water. If some ink runs in the water, it means that the holes have been unblocked.
Step 4: Hence, let the alcohol act for 20 minutes on the ink before putting the cartridge back in the printer.
Step 5: Run some test prints before using the printer normally.

Note: I would suggest you to do an automatic head cleaning each time before any printing task. Hence it will reduce the risk of having the print heads blocked by dried ink.

Try a direct USB connection and get the drivers from Lexmark:

The Vista driver should work under Windows 7. Install the drivers before connecting the USB cable.

If the USB connection doesn't work, first try a different cable and then try changing USB ports. The printer does have internet connection options but those can be trickier to diagnose a problem. (Problems with firewalls or Adding the device in the Control Panel are common.)

That is because they cannot e refilled. The ones you get with your printer ( 28 & 29) are what Lexmark calls "return program cartridges", which means they are for one use only.
I suggest you buy other cartridges that can be refilled. Those are either 28A or 34 (black cartridge) and 29A or 35 (color cartridge).

clean the printer making sure no small particles of paper is inside and check no parts is broken...

The encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer. Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.
The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a guitar.
The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly. Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and try printing the self test. If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.
If you cannot repair the strip, please let us know so that we can assist you further.
Please Note: Fixing the encoder strip is a delicate procedure. During the troubleshooting, if the strip breaks, you will not be able to use the printer.

1. Turn the printer off and open the access cover.
2. Look for any obstructions in the paper path and remove them if necessary. (It is possible to move the carrier assembly with the power off.)
3. Turn the printer on, load some paper, and press the Form Feed button. (On the X83, press the Select button.)
4. Watch the paper as it feeds through and try to determine where the jam is occurring.
5. Check to see if all the rollers are turning.

If all the rollers are turning, there may be something in the feed path that you can't see. Go to step 6.
If not, there is probably a feed motor or a gear problem and the printer may require service.
6. If the paper is jamming under the carrier assembly, you may be able to fix it using the manual feed slot.
7. Turn the printer off.
8. Take a #10 envelope and feed it through the left side of the manual feed slot until it comes right through the printer to the back of the exit rollers.
9. Move it up and down first, and then slowly move it over to the right side. If something is stuck under the black guide plate, this may work it loose.

Maybe your USB port or USB cable is not working? For sure you need to get the latest drivers for Vista, Try to download the driver from Lexmark website at http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi?category=Drivers&ccs=229:1:0:552:0:0&searchLang=en&os_group=Windows%20Vista If that still doesn't work, see if you can get another USB device to connect to your computer - like a USB Flash Drive (or "thumb drive").

The only work around to this is to use two catridges(2 color and 2 black and white). The reason is the printer has a mechanism to check if the same catridge is being used again. SO when you have two cartridges when one is finished refill the other and use and vice-versa. This way you will be able to refill and use for ever without any problems..

I had the same problem with lexmark z845. It is easy to solve this problem.Just do like the picture I post and you never get the paper pull to one side again. The problem is the rolling motor is too strong, so it pull the paper out out the tray in oneside. I use the mini cassette box, stick it with the super glue. And the printer works very well
