I cannot connect to my

Most laptops have three modes for video:
* output only to internal LCD screen
* output only to external VGA port
* output to both internal and external

Hold down the 'fn' ("function") key on the keyboard, and press one of the twelve 'F' ("function") keys, to "toggle" the video through the above 3 modes of operation, until you get output through the VGA port to the TV.

Also, on the TV, use the "input" or "source" button on the TV's remote control to select the 'VGA' input-port as the signal to be displayed on the TV screen.

The display on my HP Pavilion dv5220us laptop has stopped working

It sounds like either the LCD cable that runs from the video card to the LCD is bad, or the LCD itself is bad. If you feel comfortable taking it apart, examine the cable for physical damage such as a worn spot from rubbing as the lid is opened and closed.

If there is no damage like this the cable could still be bad (broken wire inside) but more likely it is the screen.

Either way, you should be able to find a replacement on eBay, etc.

It is good that the external monitor works as this eliminates the system board, video card, and OS as culprits, also the fact that the screen glows shows that the inverter and backlight are good.

My notebook says it cannot

Hello, Judah.

Most typical reason is when you have a SATA hard drive and you have RAID/SATA mode configured in your BIOS.

To resolve, restart your computer and select F10 to go to Setup.

Navigate the Configuration options to locate the Native-SATA setting.

Change the mode to IDE

Save and exit.

Hope this helps.

Hello. when i plug in

Hi,

Remove the AC power jack and then the battery. Hold down the on/off button for 30 seconds, that will drain any residual power from the laptop.

Then just plug in AC power only and try to boot the laptop up. If it boots let it load Windows and then shut it down. Remove the AC power jack and then re-insert the battery. Then try to boot the laptop up.

If it boots up you all good.

If this does not work please post back.

Good luck.

Upgrade this notebook

Hi,
Yes you can upgrade that notebook.

The notebook is sold with 1GB DDR SDRAM which is upgradable to 2GB RAM, 2 slots 1x1GB in each slot.

The hard drive is usually 120GB SATA which you can put any drive in up to 320GB or 500GB (if you can get on of that size)

The processor is a core duo. It is upgradable but i wouldn't bother with that as 1.6GHz is more than sufficient.

Regards.

How to change fan in HP DV5220us?

I would like you to go here, to HP.com/Support and the download page for the HP Pavilion dv5220us - Maintenance and Service Guide,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3184211&lang=en&#

It's a manual really. It's in PDF file form.
On the link above, click on ->
HP Pavilion dv5220us Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide <- (It's 4.52MB in size)

After you click on it, you may not see anything happening right away. Sometimes it takes 20 to 30 seconds before you see the first page. Sometimes it only takes 10 seconds. You will see the PDF file is still downloading. Let it FULLY download, before looking through it. (I downloaded it just now, and it took 18 seconds, with no further download time. I have Adobe Reader 9.1, and a medium speed DSL connection)

This way I can tell you, and show you.

You can also save this PDF file to your computer. This way you can look at it anytime you want, and can also burn it off to CD disk. Then you can delete it off of your computer, and free up harddrive space.

To copy it, wait until the PDF file has fully downloaded. Then look at the icons in the top header. You want to click on the Floppy Disk icon. It's the second one from the left. Hovering your mouse cursor on it, will briefly reveal, "Click to save this file to your computer or another location"

After you click on the Floppy disk icon, a -> Save a copy.. <- window will come up. Two things I would like you to do,
1.You will see -> Save in: <- and a box to the right of it. Go to the right of the box, and click on the down arrow. Now you will see a 'tree' to the left. Click on -> My Documents.
This way it will go to your My Documents folder. Otherwise it will wind up on your desktop screen.

2.At the bottom of the Save a copy.. window is -> File name:
you will see -> c00700932.pdf <- highlighted in blue. (In the box to the right of File name:)
Unless you feel like looking for c00700932.pdf in your My Documents folder, or on a CD, do this,

Put your mouse cursor right after the -> f <- in .pdf
Left-click TWICE. Now make 1 space with your spacebar.
Type ->HP Pavilion dv5220us Service Manual
(You have to click twice, otherwise you will wipe out the c00700932.pdf, and your computer may not be able to find the file.
It has to have c00700932.pdf in the file name)

Then go below to the right, and click on -> Save.
This way all you have to do is click on Start>My Documents>find the file name, and double-click on it.
Voila!

1.Remove the AC adapter (Charger) if plugged in. Remove the battery.

2.You should have an ESD wrist ********. (Anti-static wrist strap)
They're cheap. About $7 at Radio Shack, but you can find them all over. Connect the alligator clip of the wriststrap to a good ground.
I use an empty desktop computer case, and clip to the metal frame.

3.Page 152 tells you how to remove and replace the Fan/Heatsink Assembly. You are going to be touching the processor. Definitely have that ESD wrist ********. Your body carries Static. Static will silently fry out your computer hardware components. Especially the Processor! You won't see or feel the Static!

4.Don't forget to clean the top of the processor, and the bottom of the heatsink, and apply fresh thermal paste.I use Q-tips and rubbing alcohol. (Isopropyl) Sometimes it's a gooey mess, and takes few Q-tips. If there is a thermal pad, take it off, throw it away. They're Junk! Use fresh thermal paste. You can buy a small tube for $6. (Tigerdirect and Newegg has thermal paste, as well as a lot of computer stores)

There you go!
Would appreciate it if you would rate my solution.
