Sounds like you have a backlight problem. To verify this, turn on the set and dim the lights in the room. Take a bright flashlight and shine it on the screen. If you see a faint picture, you either have a back inverter or a bad backlight bulb.

Your TV is probably in RGB mode which means its looking for a computer signal. Plug a computer into your TV and then it will stay on. Then you can change it back to TV mode.

The TV usually hums when the backlight setting is too low. So turning it up should get rid of the problem. To do this please follow these instructions:

1. Turn the TV on.
2. Press the Menu button on the remote, located right below the channel changing button.
3. Press the down direction button, located at the middle of the remote. Press that button until the backlight is highlighted.
4. Press the right direction button until the backlight is at 100.
5. Press the OK button and then the Exit button until you get back to your picture.

i had the same problem and it was fixed by enlarging the picture size or v-position. works great now.

It is actually easier than most people think. Try taking it apart and see if it is something you could do. Much cheaper than a new tv.

Vizio Tvs have a problem.. mine does the same thing almost. turns on off about 20 times before it will turn on and stay on..

I had the same thing just happen and I used the following instructions from the Vizio Website for "humming sound" on tv and it worked. My sound is now working!!!!

1- Power off TV

2- Unplug TV from outlet

3- Press and hold in the power button on the TV for 30 seconds (while it is unplugged from the wall)

4- Release the power button

5- Plug in the TV into a different outlet

6- Power the TV back on.

Reset the TV settings.

Digital audio will only be enabled through the optical in jack. And the sourse has to be a digital broadcast.

You can't do it without its remote control.

take your remote apart and clean it then on the board take a pencil eraser and clean the contacts put back toghter and try

No picture/no sound condition could be caused by either a faulty power supply or main board. Proper electronic troubleshooting will need to be done to verify. If the set is under any kind of warranty, return it ASAP

I believe the problem is a failing main board i had a 37 inch vizio that had similar problem and was fixed 100% by replacing main board. i know have the 42 inch and have experianced dark screen a few times im still looking into it.
