The camera records the date/time with the image file but will not imprint it over the image. That's done when you print the picture. Consult your printer manual and/or the manual for the printing software.

1. If you simply want to see the date and time on the screen, press up/down while reviewing your pictures until you get the view you want.

2. If you want the date and time printed on the pictures, that needs to be done in whatever program you use to print. For example, Nikon ViewNX has a "Print Photo Information" check box in its Print dialog.

Note: The camera is not going to damage your pictures by imprinting date and time on any portion of the image. It will record that information (and a lot more), but its priority is on getting the image data.

If you've safely downloaded the pics to your computer, then just format the card in the camera to get it back to its original empty state.

In the Setup menu, select "CSM/Setup menu" and set it to "Full" instead of "Simple." For some reason Nikon thinks that most users don't need those options.

First, you have to be in one of the PSAM modes; in the other modes the camera decides whether it needs the flash and in daylight it will decide there's enough light without it. So, after turning the model dial to one of the PSAM positions, press the flash button on the front of the camera to pop up the flash. In these modes the camera will fire the flash if it's popped up, and not if it's down.

To change the flash mode, hold down the flash button (after it's popped up) and turn the command dial. Depending on the chosen exposure mode, your choices may include Fill flash, Red-eye reduction, Rear-curtain sync, Slow sync, Rear-curtain plus red-eye reduction, and Rear-curtain plus slow sync. Refer to the "Flash Mode" section of the manual for full details.

I am assuming that you are in manual mode. It's on board computer has decided that to prevent camera shake or motion blur that the flash was needed. Now there are things you can do if you don't want the flash to fire. If you use one of the manual modes and set your ISO to a high ISO(800ish) and make sure your f-stop is set for the lowest number your lens will accept.

It seems to me, that your problen is coarsed by dust on your Nikons sensor.

You will simply have to clean your Nikons sensor.

Avoid sticking anything inside the camera (mechanical or chemical) if at all possible.
Dust can usually be removed with a "Giottos Rocket Air Blaster", which costs $10 at amazon.com. Note that dust on your mirror should not appear on your photos since the mirror is a different light path from the image sensor. Try locking up the mirror and blasting some air underneath it to remove dust from your sensor.

While viewing the photo, press cursor-up/down to cycle through the different views of your photo.

There's likely a problem with your shutter, maybe it won't be properly triggered by the electronics.
You should let someone from a camera store look at it, there won't be an easy "at home" solution.

Unfortunately there is probably nothing you can do for this. You best bet is to send it to Nikon for repair. Here is their contact info 1-800-Nikon US (1-800-645-6687)

Lens motor(inside the lens) could be damaged already. The D40x focusing system is dependent on the lens, just like any other Nikon Dx camera except for the ones that has built-in motor to its body, e.g. D90, D7000. Try a different lens, most likely it should work

Red-eye is caused by the light from the flash reflecting from the back of the eye. There are several ways to eliminate or at least reduce the effect. One, as you've done, is to edit the photo after it's been taken. The red-eye reduction feature of the camera shines a light at the subject, causing the pupils to contract and thus reduce the reflection from the eyes.

A good way is to move the flash away from the camera. This causes the red reflection to go toward the flash, not the camera. Unfortunately, the D40x lacks the Commander mode to control remote flashes. Instead, you can use something like the SC-29 cord to move the flash away from the camera.

Another possibility to consider is to not use the flash at all. Bump up the ISO and see whether there's enough light for existing-light photography.

The Nikon D40 in Auto Focus mode will only allow the shutter to operate when the image is in focus. When looking through the viewfinder, the bottom edge provides information relative to what you are looking at. See the image below:



Item 2 is the focus indicator. It must be illuminated to allow the shutter to release. If it is not illuminated, the lens has not been able to determine the correct focus. This can happen when attempting to take a picture in low light conditions. Make sure that the front facing "focus assist lamp" on the camera (between the shutter release and lens) has not been blocked or disabled (Settings Menu # 09) and try again. Many times, you will see and or hear the lens "hunt" for proper focus - the lens will travel from one end of its focus range to the other trying to find focus. When it can't, it stops and prevents the shutter from releasing. You can get around this "unable to focus" issue by changing the position of the switch on the lens to "Manual Focus" mode, detailed below:

If a lens has an "A - M" switch, move it to "M" to manually focus. If the switch says "M/A - M " then leave on M/A (unless you're going to be taking several or more in manual mode), as these lenses may be focused manually at any time in either position. As soon as you tap the shutter button in M/A you return to autofocus.

More advanced lenses, like the 18-200mm, 70-300mm VR and 18-135mm, and any lens with an M/A position, may be focused manually at any time without moving any switches. Leave them in their A or A/M positions.

My Nikon D40 suddenly will not recognize the eye-fi card. Have been using it for a while with this card. Any suggestions?

hiwhen you say shutter does not operate, it mean too general to answer. could you provide more detail?I will give how does shutter work. First, you press shutter button, it will activate two switchs (one is focus and meter and the other is release ) Second, mirror goes up and opening shutter curtain move up. Third, closing shutter curtain down and mirror down and picture come out. Of course there is also aperture control unit sequence.

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If that doesn't do it, try another card.

Hiit is simple dust particles. I can let you know by very simple tip. But unfortunately I can not describe in word everything. First thing you can try is that you can you ear know remover or squeeze blower. Set the camera at ccd cleaning mode.(not auto mode) See front inside of mirror box when mirror goes up, you can recognize the brown spot. Blow with the blower. Other method is I can not expain everything.

From the description of the problem, it seems that the 'write protection switch' on the memory card is moved to the 'Locked' position.

To unlock the card, kindly remove the memory card fom the camera and slide the write protection switch on the side of the memory card to the unlocked position. (See attached images)

Error "Press shutter release button" is actually due to failure of the lens control system
To solve it
First try by just Reset the camera by taking out the battery or by reset button, If error is still there then first remove the battery and replace card battery and while switching on tap the lens hood on your hands so as to disengage any dirt or mechanism being struck. For this use some air to blow between the lens to dislodge any sand particles struck inside.
After it check the focusing option is auto or manual the auto focus must be 18-55 and lens must be properly fixed
If error still exist then you may need servicing of your camera, in this case best option is to contact authorized Nikon Camera's service provider. Your problem will be solved

hi did you impact your camera some where?...that is most of. or natural defective. There will be three cause. first is built in flash charging switch out of place. second is flash circuit defective. third is shutter unit sync defective. you local repair shop would charge you around $65 to 195 depend on what really they want to charge.
