American Standard WCZ036F Air Conditioner - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Outside unit starts but stops running in a few minutes. The rest of the a/c seems to be fine but doesn't cool
there could be quite a few problems with it. either it has something to do with the high or low safety pressure switches. Or you have a low voltage issue-not getting enough low voltage power to the coil of the contactor. how long do you wait after you turn the unit on? there is a 5 to 10 minute delay in the control board to keep the compressor from short cycling. meaning to keep the compressor from turning off then on again right away. short cycling a compressor too much will ruin it. There also could be an issue with the delay board it self. Or its a heat pump it could be an issue with the defrost board or the defrost sensor. I have even seen it to have a short in the wires of the coil of the contactor. But when that happens it will burn out the transformer or the low voltage fuse of the transformer or on the control board.
have you got it figured out already? If not can you give me more info on what it does? Or if it ever comes on after you wait at least ten minutes. Can you hear the hum the coil of the contactor makes when it is calling for the cooling. you might even have a problem with the contacts of the contactor not getting the proper power thru it to turn or keep the unit on.
Like I said there could be quite a few different possible issues with it to not stay on. If you need further help, reach me via phone at

Blower motor
Not sure if you ever figured it out. Or if someone figured it out for you. Shows no one answered you on here. So I thought I would ask you a question plus also say what I thought it was . When the unit and or the thermostat was replaced? Was the thermostat wire that is inbetween the unit and the blower ever replaced? A service tech should have checked if the tstat wires were touching or shorted together. If you go by color which you should never do. Red is usually 24 volts or power, green is fan, yellow is cooling, white is heat, orange is the reversing valve if its a heat pump, orange to O terminal if RV in cooling or orange to B terminal if RV in heat. O or B terminal depends on who the manufacturer of the unit is. Blue wire is usually the common. you should always check to see how it is wired at the board or relay in the unit. not everyone wires it by the colors. If your fans low voltage wires are touching the low voltage 24 volt power wires in the unit or if the wires are shorted or touching in the wire sleeve or at the thermostat. the blower motor will never shut off. Or if the blower motor is wired directly to line voltage it will never shut off and testing the low voltage wire wont matter.
Your question was from last summer. So I am assuming you had someone figure it out by now. If not then check my suggestions. Hope that helps you. If you need further help, reach me via phone at

This is a two piece unit with an outside compressor? If there is no power to the thermostats, check the power at the inside unit. There should be a fuse and a transformer there. Check the fuse and if you have a volt meter, check the voltage on the secondary side of the transformer.

My heritage 14 unit has
Is the indoor fan running? check the breakers and reset as needed. also check the tstat . you should find a disconnect next to the outdoor unit some have fuses and some just are a copper bar device . If it has fuses check them .. if not you may have fried the transformer or the capisitor has failed. You will need equipment to check it let me know if this helps Jon

The compressor does not come
Hi, sounds like the capacitor may be at fault, it is a silver oval or round device connected to the brown wires off your compressor, one sign of a bad capacitor is the top where the leads are will bulge out , normally the top is flat, check there first and be sure to cut power to unit first!! I may be a dual capacitor (two in one) make sure the replacement is the same values as is there now, example if it is a 55/7.5 mfd 370v then you need to go back with the same, the volt side can differ to 440v if there was origanally a 370v, but not the other way, don't put a 370v where it was 440v.
This should help!!

The blower motor does not
Hello, turn off power to the furnace and remove the thermostat, then take the R and W Wires and put a jumper wire between them, then turn power back on if this turms on the furnace then you have a bad thermostat if it does not it is a problem with the integrated control board or possibly a low voltqge wire is loose.

I have a american standartd and the burner goes on
Follow the wires from the blower to the circuit board. If there are more than one speed on the blower, unplug the current speed and plug in the wire for a different speed. The circuit board is usually marked Heat, Cool and Park. Take the one on Park and put it on Heat. You can also check for 110 volts on the Heat terminal after the burner runs for about 90 seconds. You can also test the blower by energizing it from a 110 volt source.

I replased the blower moter
purple wire common to capacitor brown fan terminal to capacitor capacitor is a canister that wires plug into it has three legs common fan and herm your last wire may go to contactor or defrost board or fan relay if you look on you drawing it will tell you where these go if its a indoor blower it is breviated idm if outdoor fan it will be odm all wires are color coded and fairly easy to trace you can also cross-out the wires that are hooked up in the unit with the drawing leaving those three but above all make sure the power is off when doing this a capcitor produces more power it turns 120v into 370 volt

Cleaning the coils with in the first year no. Rec to have it service once a year though. Cleaning them every other year. Look at them if you take a flash light and can see light thought the other side they should be good. You can also take your garden hose and clean them your self. Just dont get to close that you bend the fins.
