Dell Inspiron 1420 is not able to read empty cds or DVDS. My I go to properties it shows empty space as 0. When I try to burn a Cd it says " Insert a blank CD"

Stephen buddy, we need to talk. I do NOT understand anything you are trying to describe. Okay, so you installed a FRESH Operating System and now it is NOT recognizing your DVD-rom, right? Okay, restart the computer and let Windows load up fully. Check Control Panel and check your list of Devices. Sometimes, when you re-install and O.S., you may have to update the firmware or drivers for certain devices.

My cd rom drive does

You could try any of these steps to check if it could help.1.) Try to check if your discs would be read in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. To do so, you can go by pressing F8 at startup and selecting the appropriate option from there. If it does work, then definitely there's a software that's causing the issue on your optical drive. If not, let's move on.2.) Try to remove upper and lower filters. Depending on your operating system, the steps needed would vary, but I would suggest that you just use Microsoft's Fix-It Utility. 3.) If you have Dell's OEM Operating System disc or their drivers "Resource Disc", you could also try to boot off of it to try to check your CD drive's functionality. To do so, go to F12 during startup [e.g. when the Dell logo comes up] and select the option to boot from the CD/DVD/CDRW drive. That would give you a clear indicator on whether your CD drive is still functional or not since it would not be affected by any software application.

CD not read

Does the CD have any large or visible scratches on it? If so, you might be able to use toothpaste to fix it. Apply toothpaste onto the CD, rub it in, wash and dry it, and try to use it again

After formatting my dell vostro

If you reinstalled Windows from the Dell-provided "System Restore" CD/DVD disks, you should be able to play DVD disks.

If you reinstalled Windows from some "other" Windows disks, you should be able to view the files/folders on any DVD-disk, but you will be lacking the software to properly "decode" those files, and to "play" the content.

Not write file on cd

First make sure your dvd drive is also a dvd burner, if it is not a burner then you can not write files to disks and will have to buy a new one

If that is not the problem, you have to make sure that you're using a dvd-rw (if the disc has info on it) or a dvd-r that has nothing on it. If you are not using one of those then the process will not work

I have a dell vostro

First thing to do is go onto the start menu, and right click on computer, click on properties and look for the hardware tab. Click on device manager and look for DVD/CD rom drives. Click the plus sign next to that selection and see if you DVD drive is shown or if it has a question mark next to it.

If it is shown and you click on it, it will tell you if the device is working properly. If it is, then you may just need to obtain a DVD/CD cleaning disk. The lenses do get dirty, similar to a audio CD player, and need to be cleaned to read properly.

The only other thing you can do is make sure the device is seated properly into the laptop, but they are secured with a screw on the bottom of the laptop, so that does not often happen.

If the device is not working properly, right click on it and choose uninstall. Restart your computer and the device will be seen as new hardware and a driver installed by windows. If you need an updated driver, go to www.dell.com, choose support and put your service tag in to get all available drivers for your laptop.

Try these suggestions and see if that solves your problem.

If this solution was helpful, please remember to leave positive feedback for me.

Thank You,

Brian
