Hi
right click on my computer or computer, which you will find from either your desktop or from the start menu. Select Manage from the list.
Now on the management window, on the left side click on device manager.
now on the right, do you see a dvd drive or similar? If not, right click on any device and select scan for hardware changes, if the drive still doesn't show up on the list, or even as a unknown device or similar, then it is most likely faulty.
I would recommend that you check the bios of your laptop and see if the CD rom drive is listed there, to get into bios, read this tip I wrote about something else earlier, but it shows you how to get into bios
http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575592-unable_to_start_cd_solve_boot_cd_issues_in bios, see if you can find a name for your CD rom drive. if you look at the tip page, on the 3rd picture you see a SONY CD ROM DRIVE on the center of the image, if you can't see any similar CD ROM drive entry in your computers bios then most likely the drive is not working at all and is not detected or it might be lose from the slot.
you might have to replace the drive, you should get a professional to look over the machine before replacing any parts since I can't see all the things over the internet.
