P1 usually refers to evaporator pan full with water. If you drain it out it will work fine. If you need to reset it just unplug the power cord for two minutes.

Probably the filters are clogh with dust.

Yes a dryer hose will work, you can also buy insulated pipe from an Air conditioning supply house or possibly LOWES.

you said that it has not been used for 3 yrs then maybe the tube leading to the water drain is clogged. try to clean it

It will run in the cooling mode until the condensate pan fills with water then it will turn off the compressor and operate in a fan only mode, no cooling.

you have high humidity. Its supposed to drain the water into a bucket. Sounds like south florida to me?

remove the drain bucket and look inside. there should be a hose that runs from the evaperator to the drain bucket. if you can blow air through hose to see if it is clogged. or try to take casing off and pour a little bleach/water mixture down tube , it probably has some mold built up in it
