How far out does a microhood sit from the cabinet.

Don't know right off the top of my head, but the installation instructions should tell the min and max height from the stove. If they don't you may want to contact an electrician to find out.

Loose handle.

To access the door screws on MOST microwave ovens, you need to remove the inner door panel that goes around the perimeter of the glass. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3696942-microwave_oven_door_handle_replacement

This can be peroformed with the door in place, or with the door removed. If you have any questions, please post back with your complete model number and let me know. I hope this helps you.

My kenmore microwave is displaying

SE = SERVICE, the Microwave is asking/telling? you to take this unit to be "Serviced" as it has developed an internal fault. (Or so it "Thinks") In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man. Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.

Micro displays POWER FAILURE when started or at end of cook cycle

This problem is almost always due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.

This is most common on models made by Samsung (no matter what brand they are) and they will likely have an FCC ID number prefix of "A3L" on the tag in or on the unit.

One way to test it is to do the following:

NOISY MAGNETRON TEST (c) 2009 William E. Miller [email protected] (used with permission by poster, who holds the copyright)

1. Unplug the microwave or turn off its breaker.
2. Open the door, then detach the control panel as shown in the video at http://www.microwavedisplay.com and swing it down, but without disconnecting the wires. )If you have any trouble getting the grille off once the screws are removed, slide the hood vent grille to the left about 1/4", then then pull it forward. On some models there are L-shaped clips that fit into a slot to hold bottom of the vent.)
3. Plug the microwave back in.
4. Make sure neither you nor anyone else reaches in behind the control panel. There will exposed high-voltage connections.
5. Put a few cups worth of water in a microwave-safe container and place it inside the microwave.

6. Shut the door.
7. Run the microwave for about 1 minute or so on full power. (Time Cook > 1 > 0 > 0 > Start, e.g.)
8. If it does not fail, try it several more times.
9. When the water boils, change the water and try again.

NOTE:
If your model does not have a door handle, you will need to unplug the oven and reattach the control panel to be able to open the door.

If it still does not fail, I would recommend that you put it all back together and keep using it until it fails more consistently, then repeat this test.

While a microwave should never be left running unattended under any circumstances (as your owner's manual will tell you) it's even more important when one is exhibiting a failure or any odd behavior. So play it safe and stay with it while it's running!

If you or someone you know want to replace the magnetron yourself, you will need to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download owner's manuals and installation instructions for several brands (including Amana, Jenn-Air, Kitchenaid, Litton, Maytag, Roper, Tappan, Thermador and Whirlpool) here.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help
here.

I'd recommend that your bookmark this link to your favorites.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

If you prefer to arrange service by an authorized service center, Whirlpool customer service is here.

The microwave runs but it's not cooking anything

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. There are some high voltage circuits that feed the magnetron and you can potentially get hurt if you don't know what you are doing. Would recommend you have it serviced by a professional if you want it fixed, otherwise look for a new one since the cost of repair can come close to the price of a new microwave oven.

MICROWAVE NOT HEATING

Most likely you have a magnetron problem. Easy to replace (DYI) but make sure the high voltage capacitor is fully discharged first against the case.

A few buttons on our

I understand that you are trying to repair this component, but this is not possible. Once the circuitry is damaged, due to the introduction of water, this will short out the board. This cannot be cleaned, or wiped away. This damage is more serious, in nature.

Once humidity, or water, is introduced to an electrified circuit, it will damage it, beyond repair. Unfortunately, simply cleaning of the water will not repair this type of damage. The necessary actions will be to have this damaged touch board replace, asap.

NOTE_ The touch board assembly is not designed to be disassembled in this manner.

What is a E5 error code in a micro over model

An "SE" error would be a shorted membrane keypad.

I'm not sure about an "E5" error.

You would have to consult the "mini-manual" or technical sheet inside the microwave, usually located behind the control panel or hidden inside the area behind the grille. It may mention an "E5" error.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If it is an SE error this is a problem that's pretty easy for the homeowner or a friend to do himself. And you can save $200 or so.

I'll tell you what the DIY options are and you can decide if you'd prefer one of those or to call Sears/Kenmore for service:

Take your control box off as in the video at our site, peel the old keypad off as in this handy guide with pictures , clean the surface, stick on the new keypad
order by part number here DE34-00233T SWITCH MEMBRANE $20.60 membrane keypad
(We can do this job for you for a total of $64.95, but as you can see, the other two options are more practical and economical)

Take your control box off as in the video at our site, disconnect the keypad strip as shown here, move your circuit board to the new frame, reinstall
order by part number here DE94-01647D ASY CONTROL PANEL $31.77 control panel frame with keypad

Take yours off as in the video at our site, then install the new one
order by part number here DE94-01648D ASY CONTROL, BOX $58.98 complete control panel assembly with frame, keypad and circuit board
