It sounds like you may be talking about the wavegudie cover. Does it cover a square hole in the side or top of the caivty?
If so, it is needed. It prevents grease and food debris from getting in the waveguide, which can damage the magnetron.

Danby microwave
Check if your fuse is still ok. If the fuse is gone replace and see if it is working.
Burn at bottom of microwave
First try cleaning the burned mark off. Dip a scrubber in lemon juice and sprinkle salt on it; this is also great for burned coffee pots. The smell can be gotten rid of this way: Boil lemon peel in water, then put the water in a spray bottle. Not only will it make your microwave smell fresh but the lemon oil will make it easier to clean. If it still smells of burning rubber, take the back off and inspect the wiring. IF you see burned wiring, please do yourself a favor and replace the microwave!
Microwaves work by making the molecules in food get "excited"-they move more-meaning, if there IS rubber burning, then there will be minute molecules of rubber in your food, which is BAD for your immune system. If it's just burned chocolate, though, it is harmless unless you are allergic.
Grrrrr
If the power isn't coming on at all, unplug the unit and take the back off (probably 6 screws or more). Inside there might be a fuse like a house fuse. Check that. Sometimes just replacing the fuse is all it needs.
How to set the time
Try this combination:
Cancel, Clock, ### (time numbers), Clock again
If that doesn't do it, contact Danby here: http://www.danby.com/page.asp?code=7
Danby Designer 1.1 cu.ft. Microwave
Weird that it worked when you left then not. Have you had the lights inside of your house dimming off and on?? It could mean a bad neutral connection to your house from the power pole. That can cause the low voltage transformer on the timer board to burn out. So the fuse in the unit will not even blow but still kill the Low Voltage transformer. If sounds possible call your power company to do a "load test" on the incoming power lines to your house.. They don't typically even charge to do that. They take out your meter and put a tester in that spot that tests the supply to your house.
...have Danby 1.0 cu. ft.
When talking about "Power Level", there is a misconception that the cooking power is being adjusted. This is not the case. The user is actually adjusting the duty cycle of the Magnetron. For instance at 30%, the Magnetron will be turned on for 20 sec. and off for 40 sec. A loud 60 cycle hum is usually caused by a shorted Magnetron. Thus the unit is not economically repairable.
