Some units work better with -R, some with +R

Please check the connections , check the leads from the DVD to the TV, use the line out from DVD to the line in the TV using the video and audio inputs. If this wont work then in most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD . If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective.

The main motor will not work in some cases as unless the tracks are read the drive motor will not work with signal from the processor.Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board

Remove the top lid from your machine, next see if you can carefully remove the tape "without pulling" if it won't come out, cut the tape with scissors and make sure all tape particles are removed, sometimes by removing the defective tape the vcr will function. Now if it won't work after that point you probably have a mechanical issue which will require a repair shop.

Either open the disc tray, blow deep inside the tray real hard 3-5 times, or remove the cover and clean the laser eye with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. Disc cleaners are junk and don't work.
If cleaning doesn't help, then the circuit is bad. The circuit controls the motors that move to read the disc. It is very common. You can get parts at many websites. If you want to know which sites, let me know.

please check your player compression capable of playing, you need trial and error as experimental if you still not confirm the type of video your player capable off.

If your unit is older the optical pick up lens may be dirty or has gone bad. Most Philips units are exchange items only, meaning they replace it under warranty instead of fixing it, if its out of warranty there usually are no parts or service information on them. Philips was bought be Funai and is not the company it used to be. Check if the unit will play a audio CD, if it does the pickup assembly is bad, some will play a CD but not a DVD. You may be able to clean the p/u lens with alcohol and a Q-tip. The lens is under the clamp that holds the disc while spinning.

If you are in Europe, change the Video Format to PAL manually. If you are in the US, change it back to NTSC.

Try to play a different disc to check if this is a problem with the disc that you have ...

This may have to do with your TV instead of the DVD player. If you have a red, blue and green cable running from the Philips to your TV, check the back of the TV to see if it has a slot marked "H/V". If so, purchase a 7-part component cable instead of the usual 5-part - it will have a red/green/blue, red/white, and two h/v cables.

Make sure there is red and white cable running from your cable box to the slot marked AV1 IN on the back of the Philips.
