When I turn it on

Hi there!

After trying to load to you windows XP does it give you any error message? If not, have you tried to remove unnecessary things that is plugged in to your computer for example printer, mp3 something like that just leave the monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged in then try to start the computer. If it's still not working and you have tried to access safe mode already then you'll need to back all the files in your computer because there's a high chance that you might need to reformat it.

Hope this helps!

Error code 00F0:136C IDE FAILED

Hi,

You probably ran the 32-bit diagnostics in this Dell computer.

The error code 00F0:136C, actually is talking about the "OPTICAL DRIVE,"which is your CD/DVD ROM; not the hard drive.

That will fail since, I am assuming you didn't put anything inside the CD-ROM.

The diagnostics tests everything and in this case, it tested the CD-ROM and failed since there is no CD inside the CD/DVD-ROM.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Oliver

Inspiron 6000 laptop - no pix on pc lcd but

Check first of all that the lid cut off switch is not sticking, temporarily disconnect this to be sure.
If you are getting an image on an external screen, the problem will most likely lie in two areas:

Inverter
Backlight

Take the laptop into a dark room and power it on. If you notice a faint image on the screen that is very dim, it is the fault of the screen backlight (replace the laptop screen)

If there is NO image even a faint one, it is the fault of the inverter (replace inverter).

To access both, you will need to remove the screen bezel, the battery and the switch cover panel. Getting the inverter off is a matter of unplugging it from the VGA cable and removing the pink and white HT wires to the screen ( NO power must be going through the laptop as you do this because the inverter converts the 19 volts DC into 1000 volts to power the screen.

Getting the screen off involves the above than unscrewing the cover retaining screws and the hinge supports and carefully undoing the vga ribbon cable

WINDOWS TRIES TO LOAD ,

Try booting to safe Mode (f8), see if you get a normal screen that does not shut off. If you do, then suspect a graphics driver update (usually caused by windows update) that is incompatible with your laptop. Solution is to uninstall the graphics driver and re-install one from the the dell support / downloads website for the OS that you are using.

If it will not boot even in safe mode, try connecting it to an external monitor, if it boots ok on there, you can eliminate graphics chip problems and look at the possibility that it may be the inverter failing or the backlight in the screen.

To give rough indication, if the screen image can be seen in a dark room albeit very faintly, it is the backlight that is the problem, if there is no image at all, suspect the inverter, both are located behind the screen bezel.

If the screen refuses to boot into life on an external monitor, you have a problem with the graphics chip on the motherboard

The cursor jumps backward in

Replace the mouse with a known good working one.
If you are not using a mouse (bad news) the touch pad may be failing.
In that case, an easy test and fix is to disable it in "Control Panel" then install a mouse in the USB Port.

If the problem is corrected then it is your touch pad.

Here is a link to the manual from Dell. FREE!

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6000/en/om/D5181bk5.pdf

See Page 42 on disabling the Touch Pad.

Go to EBay and insert "6000 Dell Inspiron touch pad". It's cheap but difficult to replace.

Hi,

Improve the Fixya.com experience for everyone by voting!

Unfortunately, I would either have to be in the chat mode or on the telephone with you to fully analyze your problem and provide a coherent answer. But don't despair because there is a little FREE program that may solve your problem.

It happens periodically that our computer shuts down, restarts, hibernates or some other weird thing when we really don't want it to. I'm going to pass on to you a FREE and hard to believe program from Microsoft! I have no idea why this little program hasn't been advertised but then I don't own their stock.

Just click on the following link and your problem should be solved: Download Microsoft's Fixit

I don't know your skill level so my suggestion is that you utilize the automatic function of Fixit.

Be a hero and fix your friends' computers; just don't tell them how you did it! That will be our little secret.

All the best,

Using home computer how do i keep my number lock

While the computer is booting you should get a prompt to press a key to enter system setup or bios. Once you are in the bios setup, look for a setting called boot up num lock. This should be set to on. Then every time you boot your machine it will have the num lock on.

My CD/DVD drive won't read/play

You probably will need to replace the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) in your laptop. Go to Google and search for "Dell Inspirion 6000 CD/DVD drive" to find a replacement.
To be sure it's the CD/DVD drive that's defective and not your operating system software, you could also try to boot from a boot-able DVD disk.
