When i hold down the shift key on my dell inspiron 6400 laptop i can not get it to capitalize or to type the upper level punctuation marks

Chances are your keyboard has a problem with it. I suggest that you try restarting your computer. Strange but it does the trick sometimes. If no go, go to safe mode.SAFE MODERestart your computer. While it's restarting, tap F8 until you can see the option to go to safe mode. Use your keyboard arrow to highlight safe mode. Try using the shift key in safe mode. If it works, then you need to do a system restore so that you can revert your computer's functionality to a date when it was still working well. Hardwares like your keyboard is controlled by drivers. To avoid from getting driver problems in the future after fixing your current issue, then I suggest that you install Radarsync to your computer. It will automate your computer's updating and fixing (driver) mechanism. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please reply to this post.

DELL INSPIRON 6400 BATTERY CHARGE PROBLEM

The battery has 5 small dots in it. Those are there for no reason. Those are actually LED lights. There's a button you can press. If we number the lights 1-2-3-4-5 with 1 being closest to the button, check the lights when you press the button. If 1-3-5 are lit, that means that you have a dead battery and needs to be replaced. Other than that, you're battery might still be working but nearing the end of its life. Goto support.dell.com -> drivers and downloads -> enter your service tag or system type -> download Dell Quickset. Once Quickset is installed, it will diagnose your battery automatically and let you know if your battery already needs a replacement. It is just sad that batteries are covered with a separate 1-year warranty only. You can also go to www.dellbatteryprogram.com and check if your battery was part of the Dell Battery Recall Program.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop battery isn't charging, I think :(

Debby
Try booting without the battery installed. You probably will have no change but this eliminates the battery as a source of the problem. If it doesn't boot and you are sure that the external power supply is ok, you probably have a bad motherboard. At that point, the unit needs to be checked out by a pro or a really competent amateur.

If your BIOS is now corrupt you will be unable to reboot and try the BIOS flash again, not easily anyway

A lot of newer systems have special BIOS recovery procedures that can be done. You will need to consult your motherboard manual or motherboards manufacturers’ site to get these steps

Hi I need a Q key for my dell laptop Inspiron

You didn't specify the exact model you have, so the price for replacing the key may differ slightly. In any case, broken or missing keys on a laptop keyboards are very easy to install and can be done in a few minutes or less. In some occasions, you'll need to use a very small slotted screw driver to maneuver 2 or 3 pieces into the hooks on the keyboard itself then just press down on the new key to snap everything together.

You can buy a replacement key for under $5 shipped from various sellers on ebay, do a search for "dell keyboard keys"

Low disk space on recovery drive

Usually your recovery drive is a second partition that you don't really have to worry about unless you are using it to store your files. Just make sure not to delete any files that deal with the recovery of your system. Could be called system recovery or recovery.

Full screen fluctuation in Acer Laptop.

Sound very much like your LCD inverter might be going luckily there pretty cheap and you should be able to find one on Ebay.

An LCD (liquid-crystal display) inverter is a component in laptop computers that supplies the power to provide a backlight to the monitor, enabling the user to view what's on the screen. This component is commonly the culprit when the monitor goes out and can be moderately simple to replace.

Dell Inspiron 6400 throws up DIMM A socket fault after running ok for 1-2 hours

It seems as if this is 1 of 2 things. Either a sick of RAM, after heating up, fails, or the actual socket itself is bad. If it's the RAM, it's cheap, buy a new stick, if it's the socket itself, you would have to have Dell fix it, for a steep price, or use the remaining sockets with larger sticks of RAM if possible.

I have a dell inspiron

To unlock your laptop using the easiest method available go to: http://dell-inspiron-1300-bios-password.biospwd.comDell password authentication system explained :The BIOS of most modern computers also allow a password to be set for each of the connected hard drives. This password is stored in the service area of the hard disk. Because of this, moving the password protected hard drive to a new computer does not allow access to the hard drive unless the password that was assigned to the hard drive is provided. The ATA Security Mode Feature Set that is implemented in all modern hard drives actually provides for two passwords, a "Master Password" and a "User Password"The User Password locks the hard drive and the Master Password is only used to allow an administrator to reset the user password. The BIOS of many computers will not allow the master password for the hard drive to be changed from the default, so they rarely are. A quick search of Google.com for the specific model of hard drive with the phrase "ATA Master Password" will generally result in multiple web pages that contain the default master password . Hardware tools can recover, reset, or brute-force both the User and Master Passwords.Full Disk Encryption Methods:There are two major categories of full disk encryption (FDE)-software-based and hardware-based. Software-based encryption modifies the hard drive drivers and uses the CPU to encrypt all data as it is written to the drive and decrypt all data read from the hard drive. Hardware-based full disk encryption is built into the hard drive and is totally transparent to the user and does not impose a performance impact on the computer.Software-Based Full Disk EncryptionWikipedia maintains a lengthy list of disk encryption software The two most popular FDE software implementations are TrueCrypt and BitLocker. BitLocker is included as a feature in the Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7, but has to be enabled and configured to provide protection. TrueCrypt [18] is free open source software that is ideal for individual users, but lacks management features that make it attractive to enterprise-wide deployment.Deployment of software-based full disk encryption in any organization with more than just a few computers requires careful consideration of how the encryption keys will be managed. Great encryption without proper key management is like locking the doors to your house and leaving the key under your doormat. One study on the usage of encryption states that 54 percent of respondents had experienced either stolen or unaccounted for encryption keys and that 78 percent experienced system downtime due to encryption failures in the past twelve months [20]. Full Disk Encryption solutions that are targeted at the enterprise typically offer integration with Microsoft's Active Directory or other LDAP directories for secure key management. In 2008, security researchers created shockwaves by publishing a paper called Lest We Remember: Cold Boot Attacks on Encryption Keys [21]. This paper, and the accompanying YouTube video demonstrate how Software-Based FDE can be circumvented by rebooting a computer that has been left in a locked-screen or sleep state. The attack exploits the fact that Dynamic Random Access Memory

I am trying to restore my Dell Inspiron 6400 to

If you want to reformat to factory condition, then press Ctrl + F11 at start-up when the blue bar comes up with "Dell.com" on it. If you miss it then just let it start up, then restart and try again. If it still does not work, press F12 at startup and select recovery option. Please note, if you have deleted the Dell Recovery Partition this will not work for you. You will need to reformat by inserting your Operating System CD at Startup and booting from that (F12).
