Try using a different website where you can download the maps for free. These should work. If they don't, you might need a software update from the same web site before getting more maps: www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00401-20

Garmin mapping software comes with a security number. You need to contact Garmin and they will give you this number, if you purchased your maps through them or an authorized dealer.

When you go to the gar in site make sure your GPS is plug in to your comp. You will be ask to e terms the model and serial of your GPS then you will be able to see if there are any updates for the device. If there is the site will want you to download the update to your comp. Then it will tell you not to turn off your GPS most likely it does it all by it self. I have a GPS like yours I updated the map and the voice.

try calling Garmin and ask their tech department for help or go to their web site and explain problem they should get back to you right away.

The clue is that the voice is slowing and low pitch. The main processor time base has slowed... which means everything will be buggy.

First try would be to Reset the unit. Remove the face cover (GENTLY pry it loose by the fingernail groove directly under the GARMIN logo), press the RESET button, then reattach front cover... this is covered in the owners manual, available online.
If not, then it sounds like a hardware failure... time for a 1-800-800-1020 call (their customer service number)

This device is very old. it may still work and you may find parts on a website like e-bay but the streetpilot series is no longer able to get map updates. If you purchased lifetime updates back in the day you might give Garmin a call to see if they can offer any trade in value. I've heard good things about the support people there.

GARMIN offers a free download called "WebUpdater" for these products. Once you have the GARMIN USB driver for this unit installed on your computer (also avail. at GARMIN.com), you can run the WebUpdater, and it will update all known updates to the unit.

Installing "new" maps...
If you don't mean "updated" maps, then you would have to use another GARMIN mapping product like MapSource, then load the new maps into the unit via an SD FLASH card.

First get whichever USB cable that model requires if you are not tech savy take it to radio shack and tell them you need the cabnle to connect it to your computer. Go to Garmin.com and there will be a program you will have to download onto your computer. This program will have an auto detect mode that will detect your model number or you can manually type it in. If it has free updates then it will prompt you not to power off the Gamin or close the program and it will download the program. you may also have to have an SD memory card with at least 2 GB of open data space availible. IF it does not have free updates it will give you pricing, i boughtg the lifetime updates for my Garmin

I think the true purpose of the pin is for another income stream to garmin they want $110 to unlock it. If not then why not just register a pin when you register for the warranty then just use your MY GARMIN to get it when you need it???

There is a small pinhole on the bottom or right hand side of the unit for reset. Try hitting this with a paper clip or pin. If that doesn't help you may have to take it into a store.
