Try deleting the lower and upper filters of your cd rom. Please follow the step by step procedure below.

  1. Click Start and then click All Programs.
  2. Click Accessories, and then click Run.
  3. Type regedit, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  4. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  5. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  7. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  8. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  10. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  11. Exit Registry Editor.
  12. Restart the computer.

There's several possibilities as to why this is happening.
The first is that you may be moving the mouse some as you are clicking, when this happens windows registers this as two single clicks. Depending on what mouse and drivers it will be different. Go into "Control Panel" then select "Mouse", find the setting for "Double Click" (most likely under buttons, maybe another button of some sort to access this feature). Once you have it up depending on make and model you'll be able to adjust the settings for "Double Click". Make adjustment and test them in the "test area" until you have what you need.
Second, if you have a 3 button mouse set the center button to "Double Click" and use it to avoid this problem.
Third, Windows may be causing the problem by doing maintenance task in the background. This is usually caused by Windows adjusting your Virtual Memory. To fix this go into "Control Panel", choose "System", goto the "Advanced Tab", choose "Settings", goto this "Advanced Tab", under "Virtual Memory", choose "Change". Once there choose "Custom Size" then set "Initial" and "Maximum" to the same size, this size should be 4 time your RAM plus 12MB or the the current Max whichever is larger. Select This will stop windows from constantly adjusting your Virtual Memory, which is what makes Windows not respond to your double clicks. If you need further help respond to this solution and Fixya.com will notify me and I'll try to help you further.

There might be a problem during the installation of norton. What you can try to do is to perform a system restore and bring back the computer to an earlier date before you install norton or befor you get the problem. Here are the steps on how to do it:

  1. restart the computer
  2. press F8 key repeatedly when you see the VAIO logo until you get the screen that says Advanced boot option
  3. use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight safemode then press enter
  4. when it loads to safemode, go to start menu
  5. go to all programs
  6. click accessories
  7. click system tools the select system restore
  8. on the system restore window, click next
  9. in choose a different restore point, you will see list of dates or calendar where you can pick a date that you want to use in restoring back the computer settings.
  10. click on the next button again
  11. click finish
the computer will start restoring the settings back to the selected date which may take for a few mins(2mins to 10mins usually). system restore does not delete any personal files/documents. It only undo software applications, updates and settings.

Best thing to do is to try to get the restore cd set from SONY or reload the XP if you have XP CD (but you will still have to download the correct drivers for your laptop to get all the hardware to work properly) or original restore cd that comes with your laptop.

Often the fan is noisy due to being out of balance from dust and dirt. The best way to clean it is to get it out of the laptop and vacuum off the excess and carefully clean the blades. This can be quite a job on some laptops, so no matter what, you could buy a can of compressed air, and carefully spray in the air vents on your laptop, and use a vacuum sweeper to try and **** out any dust it can get at. Make sure you use short bursts of air from the can.

When putting a new system online before configuring any antivirus or other security software opens up the system to immediate infection. It is possible that if you spent any amount of time online before properly configuring your Antivirus and/or firewall that your system was infected with a virus that manipulates your system to thinking the Windows installation has been corrupted. Running a installation repair on your windows installation will resolve the issue. Simply press f8 on startup and select use last known settings that worked, or you may need to use your disks to restore the system.

Good Luck,
