Sounds like the lamp might have a problem, I would clean out the dust from the machine and see if it improves. Use canned air and a vacuum cleaner to such out the dust if you don't want to take it apart - and avoid warranty if it still has it.
Now how old, how long has the lamp been running?
If it is the first time this projector is being connected to the device it is connected on now, the signal selection might be set wrong. Check usermanual pages 47 for the signal settings and make sure they are correct.

You could also Take out the lamp from the unit, clean the machine from dust with vacuumcleaner and compressed air / canned air only. with better airflow the unit will last much longer.
If you have followed the instructions, the picture should have improved. If it has not, how old is the lamp, how many hours has it been used?
