The diagram for my dell 8300 shows where to plug

The round male plug is the older style PS 2 plug. The rectangular plug is the newer and more common USB plug. Just plug it into any of the corresponding ports on the front or back and that's all you need to do.

Vertical bands and lines on computer monitor

Ensure that your Graphics card is connected properly, you may clean the contact fingers with tissue paper. If however you don't have a graphics card then you can put it down to bad drivers in which case you would download the latest of the net, use google, or heat, your computer may be getting too hot. Install as many fans as possible and clean your computer of any dust. Dust attracts moisture and can cause short circuits. My published guide entitled My Computer is not turning on!!! Is it dead!!! No POST!!! may help in this case, hey there is always some-thing to learn.

Thanking you

My Dell Dimension 8300 shuts off while booting up,

How far does it reach before it restarts itself? Upto Windows Splash Screen? or before that? What is the operating System installed on your system? i.e. windows xp or vista or etc..etc... In the first part, it seems a hardware issue, but when I read "Once it's running, it's good...." it seems application issue. I can't make sure right now. We need to diagnose and do some analyses.

The first thing you can try is "Safe Mode", boot into Safe Mode several times and verify whether the problem persists or not. If the problem persists, you need not to do anything, but if there's no problem booting into Safe Mode, then uninstall installed programs which you could reinstall later, clean the system's registry files, delete temp files (use this program to do those cleanings [Click Here to Download]). Uninstall and reinstall the Antivirus Program or any other security programs like anti-spyware [never install two or more antiviruses on a system]. Now try again and check whether this helps or not.

Also disable all the Start Up programs except Microsoft's programs, restart your computer and try again. To do this, press "Windows Key + R" [Windows key = the key on the keyboard with Microsoft Logo], type in "msconfig" [without quotation marks], press enter, click "StartUp" tab and then "Disable All", click "Ok" and again - restart your computer several times. If this doesn't help. Then the problem must be with the Windows or the Hardware(s).
Let me know the result so that we can proceed........ All the best.

If your computer still works with its internal hard drive, I would say the issue is with the external drive. Try to backup data, then run check disk on it with the option to repair/fix errors it finds. If no luck, try to completely reformat it. If the external drive was purchased as new August of this year, it should have its own warranty of at least a year. This means, if it is faulty, you can get a warranty replacement for it. Just provide the order number or sales invoice number for the drive as a proof of your purchase in the event that you need to get a replacement for it.

Open the Control panel 2. Open the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon. 3. Verify the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" checkbox is checked. If this option is not available or is grayed out, skip to the next section of this document. 4. If you were able to check this box, click ok and close out of this window and the Control Panel. 5. Double-click the sound icon in the Systray and verify that all the sound volumes are mid-way or higher.
Check Windows services. Right Click My Computer and Manage. Choose Services and Application > Services. Choose "Windows Audio" and set to Automatic and Start. Now next you can do is If you open control panel & click device manager the window that opens will show a list of all installed hardware. Look for anything with an exclamation mark beside it, or to do with sound. If you see anything, right click it, check it isn't Disabled then select "Properties." The next window should have some tabs along the top, the one you are looking for is "Driver," you should now see an "Update driver" button. Check ur sound card information by doing this Click on start menu Click on Run Type dxdiag, enter Click on the sound tab There is button of test direct sound click on this check if there is sound Check ur registry. Check if the sound registry key is enabled or disabled. There could be an error in registry, run registry cleaner reg in out to scan for errors.
