Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Pc switching on but lines on screen only
If you can't see anything - even the text from BIOS when it boots, I would suspect that it is probably the monitor. If the PC USED to boot fine, then suddenly started behaving this way it is very possibly either the monitor or the signal to the monitor. You didn't say if the PC is a desktop or a laptop. If it is a laptop, try to find an external monitor to connect to. Of course, in most cases laptops require that you switch them to a dual monitor mode, which will be difficult if you don't see anything on the main monitor. Is the a Windows machine? What version of the OS are you running? Have you made any changes to the system? Also: be sure that if you are using an external monitor, the cable is seated fully and tightened down.

Overcome this by using an older keyboard with a PURPLE PS2 connection.Take care!Norman-Wynne Damstra

Hi,Not sure exactly what you have on the back drive or its configuration and capability, but before you can use a new drive, it needs to be partitioned, then formatted probably with the NTFS system before you can copy any files to the drive.Hopefully, you have the original system CDs or DVDs. You can change the boot sequence to boot from the CD/DVD and proceed from there. To do this, while the PC is early in the process of booting, press the F2 key to enter the setup program. Don't forget to change the boot sequence back when the overall process is complete.

this can refer to any of the components of th computer. To isolate it, remove all components and try to power on the computer with only the following: motherboard, 1 confirmed working memory , the power supply and processor. Make sure all these components are properly connected . If this does not change the status of the computer, it means, one of this components is causing it. You can try to isolate it by testing a working memory compatible with the computer with all available memory slots one by one, test another power supply, reset the CMOS configuration and if everything fails, I would suspect a motherboard failure. hope this lets you move forward, feel free to post your feedback or rating if this is useful to you.
Well done a clean install

You can try calling Dell to see if they will send you a re-installation CD. If it's out of warranty they will charge you for it. Either way you will need to have the OS (operating system software) CD to re-install Windows XP or Vista.

A flashing amber power LED indicates that the power supply is not providing the correct voltage.
- make sure if there is a voltage switch on the power supply that it is set to the voltage of your country (120 VAC for North America) maybe cycle the switch from 120 to 240 and back
- If the switch is set right and you are using a power strip/battery backup, by pass it and plug directly to the wall.
- Make sure the black and yellow 4 pin connector for the processor is connected on the motherboard.
- if all the above have no effect, replace the power supply in the tower
