How to fix a disk boot failure

download ubuntu. copy it onto a dvd as an .iso that will then be used as a bootable disk. Install this disk in your cd/dvd drive. Turn on your pavilion and go into bios to make sure the DVD drive has boot priority. Once you boot up into Ubuntu, you can access the DISK UTIL. Running this utility will offer you a way to read the "smart data" and thereby verify if your disk is physically damaged. IF the smart data shows any bad sectors, then try to do a back up and reinstall on a new hard drive. It's a long process but diagnosing the physical condition of the drive is the first step.

Today we lost power to

If the computer was not plugged into a surge protector the computer could be damaged. If it was plugged into into a surge protector see if there is a reset on the surge protector .Try unplugging the computer for a few minutes and the plug it in again and try it. You can try plugging the computer into a different outlet that you know is working(without the surge protector). If you look on the power supply there may be a reset inside the case.
If nothing works you may have only burnt out the power supply in the computer, you could try another power supply from another computer to see if it is just the power supply. If still not working you would have to test and trouble shoot all your parts to see what is damaged.

After logging on as owner , icons appear but this

There seems to be corruption on the harddisk in the form of either viruses or spyware (and from the sounds of it, quite a bit).

The best solution here would be to restore the PC back to factory defaults if you have the disks, otherwise obtain an OEM copy of Windows which you can legally reinstall using the license key which is stuck onto the machines by the factory.

I have bought a GD0608U

If you're using what I think you are your OS might not support it. I think anything past Windows 2000 won't support it but I could be wrong. Here is a link to the manual (again if it is the product I think it is...Graphic Arts?)

Hope it helps

Cannot get any sound out

Lyle,
You need to download the audio driver, and install it.
Just had to do this with my Gateway after a Restoration.

This is HP Support, and the main support page for the Pavilion a730n desktop computer,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=431078&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=5&submit.x=1&lang=en&cc=us

On this page left-click on the heading -
Software and Driver Downloads. (Ampersand for and)

On this page choose your Operating System.
I chose Windows XP for an example.

(Left-click on the blue down arrow to the left of the box, that has Select in it. Then left-click on the Operating System your computer is using. Now left-click on Next)

Left-click on the + sign to the left of -
Driver - Audio (1)
Now left-click right on the file name -
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Update

Left-click on Download.
(In blue rectangular box with two right arrows)

Instructions from HP Support for downloading, and installing:

Installation Instructions1. Download the driver update.
2. Double-click the icon for the update file downloaded in Step 1, and then click NEXT.
3. Accept the terms in the HP license agreement, and then click NEXT.
4. Click YES and wait for the update to complete.
5. Click YES to restart your PC.

Once you have restarted your computer, and Windows has full loaded, you should get a pop-up out of your system tray.
Your audio (Sound) should be back now.

If this doesn't work the only alternate suggestion I may offer, is to but an inexpensive sound card, and install it.

(Computer unplugged from power, follow Anti-Static Precautions.
Don't forget to install the CD disk from the sound card FIRST, then install the sound card)

If you have additional questions regarding this, please post in a Comment.

Regards,
joecoolvette.

(Would like to hear from you so that I know you read my solution, thanks)
