Raindrop symbol flashing - won't
Try replacing the cartridges, if that doesn't fix it then that means the printhead is bad and since you can't buy that part, you would need to get a new printer.

The cartridge cradle is moving
The bar that the cartridge moves on should be cleaned with a soft dry cloth. Do not use any lubes on it. It works on its polish and not lubricants. Clean it thoroughly end to end moving the cradle.
Light for printer is on and printer will not work
If you are SURE your cartridge has ink. (i.e. You installed in last week or recently and hardly used much in or just can FEEL the weight of it.) If this doesn't work there might be something not connecting, especially if 1) it does it with a brand new cartridge 2) or works after you clean it and reseat it.
FIX: H.P. PUTS in a chip that checks the "manufacture date" against your computer's calendar date! If it is "over their stated warranty time they say...oh.. it's too OLD! (Even if it was perfect in the package.) This is engineered obsolescence.
1. take out the "broken" cartridge.
2. Turn back computer's clock a year two or so (if you have the box check the date). Then turn off computer.
3. Open lid of printer to get the annoying engineered "Don't replace us with the power off so you can trick us" barrier down. Turn off power, be sure to hold down the barrier (it has as white sticker show the power button symbol"
4. Put in so called broken cartridge.
5. plug power back in.
6. Turn on computer. The printer will blink around a bit but ultimately my color printer light went back OFF printed a color wheel PERFECTLY proving there was lots of ink in there.
8. Now the only hassle is what do I do with files that have the wrong date on them. Well I can deal with that in the NAME if it'll save me the $35.00 for a cartridge that SHOULD WORK until is ACTUALLY RUNS out of INK ..... not TIME! (Heck when I got them they were right ON the expiration date giving me, according the fine print.. three months!)
It didn't didn't do what some people have gotten with others - a complete reset to a new cartridge but it prints! Good enough.
The fact that they'd put a barrier up to KEEP YOU for tricking it is just plain greedy.
then it may have "timed out."
Before you try this trick make sure the contacts are clean, making contact, etc.
But likely this HP's now immoral, unethical "planned obsolescence" for nearly NEW cartridges sealed in plastic with the jets coated. Honestly how few of these just go BAD on the shelf?
How do I get my hp deskjet 6940 to print labels.
You will have to use software to make the labels...like Microsoft Office Word, Open office Writer, or Microsoft Works. In MS Office Word (2003) go to tools->letters and mailings -> envelope and lables. Create the label you need.
If you use open office, go to File->New->Labels and create the label you need.
After which, you put the paper in the printer and print them out. May want to check out the size so you make sure it prints correctly.
-best of luck

HP deskjet 6940 has been installed. I see it in
hello, have you tried pressing the orange button to see if machine will continue and pick up paper and print, also are there any other lights that come on, you might want to take paper out, and turn it around, and install back in. and try again. you might also want to change one ink cartridge at a time to see if that also might be the problem
PRINT IS FINE FIRST HALF
You need to clean your print head nozzles. Find menu on your printer and push the button then use the up and down arrows to navigate the options. Find the one that says "maintenance" and push "ok" or "enter" from your printers key pad. Then find the "clean print head or nozzle" option and again push the "ok or enter" button on your printers keypad. Follow the instructions to complete the cleaning and print a test page to make sure your problem is solved. If not, repeat the cleaning until the ink flows through your print head correctly.

Red light flashes but the printer wont print
This error occurs when the chips on the cartridges are not recognised. Re-seat all cartridges and ensure they are pushed down firmly. Sliding a business card down the rear of the cartridges will help push the chips into the sensors for recognition. If this fails the chips may be faulty OR have been short circuited - note that even one faulty chip is highly unlikely, get it services to get the problem fixed.
Ink levels
On Windows XP I could see the ink levels however now on Windows 7 there is no way to see ink levels or to clean the print heads. I have to use my iMac to see ink levels and clean the print heads.
HP Deskjet printer 6940 clearly
