If you using windows 7 you can forget about this, last operating system for this old camera are win xp, you need drivers and program like video vegas or movie maker, with these program you can record with camera or record you tape in computer. Drivers you can found easly in google

It may be just a strange setting or the back-light of the LCD screen being shut down ..but it can be as well a broken connector ribbon ..If it is nothing physically wrong with it ..just disconnect the ac adapter and remove the battery for more than 5 minutes ..than reconnect them ..It should get back ..but if it does not ..press the reset button ..with a sharp object ..while the camera is on ..and keep it pressed until it restarts ..If this will not make the LCD work it means there is something wrong in the connection area..and you will have to order and change the connection ribbon ..It is not that expensive ..but you may need to get to a professional for to change it ..

First,you need to be sure if your tape is not in save, mode if it is, you will need to switch it back to record side If that do not solve your problem it means that the mechanism of the camera is faulty

I looked into Sony's website for your camcorder and found out that the software included does not support windows 7.

BUT you can download one that supports it from their website. Work on Windows 7 except windows 7 "starter".

the ribbin to the lcd is torn replace it

Hi,
Question shows It is Sony DCR-HC20E camcorder, please confirm the model number.
If camcorder playback old recorded tapes correctly but does not show live view in camera mode for fresh recording then it got ccd image chip failure problem.
CCD Imager chip will be replaced to fix the issue, let me know if you need part number info of ccd imager chip.
CCD Imager chip replacement requires soldering work with proper tools and expertise to take apart camcorder safely.

You will need to have the camera serviced/repaired. It could be either a faulty connection or a faulty lcd screen. There are many online repair places that offer free estimates. You can also get it repaired through sony. I would try and get an estimate first and then decide if it is worth repairing or just having it replaced.

Does your camera playback old recordings fine? and just can't show live view to record?
If yes, then camera has problem of bad ccd imager and this part will be replaced.
Sony announced free of cost repair scheme for subject problem. DCR-HC20E is PAL system camera so Sony Support UK can be visited for free of cost repair details as your camera model is listed there.

Did your camera come with a software or driver disc for installation in XP. If it did then install the disc in Vista and then go to the Sony website and check for an update or patch to the driver software for your particular model and apply it. I have a DVD camcorder and and solved the problem in the same way. Else the only way is to capture video through the firewire port if your camera has one. This is not going to need any drivers at all.

There are 2 possibilities in this problem.
If you are using Windows Vista, you should download updated USB driver from Sony Support. ( see Downloads )
Go to camera Menu and enable USB Streaming function so PC will recognize camera.
