Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.

big problem with sony as you can see im a pro tech but had the same fault with mine. and it broke my heart 4 weeks old and sony dont give a dam ironicly a mate told me slam my fist under the bottom and it will close after hrs of trying to fix it i took his stupid advice and after many hits it closed and worked great for a few weeks

This problem occurs when tape mechanism got problem and tape mechanism replacement is solution.
Tape mechanism replacement in this camcorder is job of qualified tech because novice can cause more damage.

This can be caused by several problems including a defective eject switch in the cameras internal circuitry or a bad motor and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

This is all due to cable you have into TV from camera, some plugs work, lots do not, you may be only carrying sound on a cable, but no pic on other cable.

Re-attach the power source message appear due to 2 reasons. 1.mechanical cable or flex damage & 2nd is Capstan motor is not working

to transfer video from your camcorder to your laptop you will need a firewire cable (ieee 1394). only with this cable you will be able to transer video.
you will also need a firewire port on your laptop.
if you don't have one then you can buy a firewire pci card.

I have the same problem, I was hoping it was th tapes that I was using. Hopefully Sony will fix this under warranty.

Searching for your manual keeps bringing up this manual https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/2698/26988801M.pdf Looking at that manual Page 16, it states the battery pack as 'NP-FP50', and that turns up batteries for $15. https://www.google.com/search?q=NP-FP50 ..

If it were worth repairing, as a Sony agent, I would replace all of the capacitors and clean up the board then reset the mechanism and test. Probably too old being 2001 vintage.
