I can't offer a solution but you may be able to find answers on the Canon website. Look on the support pages, they also may have a forum where others have come across the same problem. Final resort, talk to Canon themselves.

Move the slide switch on the side of the card.

ok, first off:
make sure the card is compatible with the camera and the camera is compatible with the card (reffer to the manuals of both products).
if all checks out, contact the manufacturer of the camera first, then do the same with the card.
if everything works up to this point, but you still cant get it to work, get a new camera.

No they should still be there, but you're going to need recovery software, and an external card reader to recover them. Take no more pics or videos until you've recovered the photos, and take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for.
You will need to use a flash card reader with this software. If you don't have one, get one, they're extremely inexpensive these days, and they actually are a better way to download your photos than directly from the camera.

The reason this occurred is that you likely never formatted the card. The card will work fine in the beginning but eventually will corrupt. AFTER you've recovered the photos, format the card in your camera to prevent this from happening again (dig out that instruction manual to figure out how). Keep in mind formatting will also totally erase your card, so again only do this after you've recovered the photos.

the front cover should come off if you jiggle it. once you get it off, there's another screw under the camera strap anchor that needs to be removed before the back will come off. i found great instructions here:

this is a lance flap problem , you must have contact authorised person to fix it,if you are a technition then please change the lance flap and find the magic,
don't worry its a routtin problem

hit the very left side of the circular button on the bottom right of the camera.

Try pushing the dis[play button.

The flash circuit is defective. As it's only a couple weeks old, recommend just exchanging it for another from your place of purchase. You shouldn't be attempting repair while its under warranty.

Make sure the write protect lock is off by taking the card out of the camera, face the card towards you, look for a small white tab on the left hand side of the card, to unlock it push the tab down, it will be at the side of the card like this .

The internal fuse in the camera needs to be replaced. I have repaired several with same symptoms.
Difficult to do yourself and it requires surface mount soldering skills.
