Could the on/off switch be shorted? Could check with a volt/ohm meter, or remove and replace.

Did you check to see if the outlet has power and if the breaker is not blown?

It could be the control board. I found out that this model air conditoner has had problems with moisture getting in the control panel and shorting it out when it's humid outside. I have the part number if anyone wants it. It cost me about $45 from Sears Parts.

most likely bearings in motor are going out in which case replace motor. The squealing wil get worse and motor will eventually lock up.

It's probably the control board inside the control panel. I had the same problem and it moisture shorted out the board. You can order a new one from Sears Parts for about $45
