Hello AnyMoose I am guessing that 6 years ago, when you posted your "QUESTION", you upgraded your Windows to Operating System to a newer version that is not supported. Hi, erieser, If your new ( used) Z22 has a name "missy", then it is NOT A "BLANK", as you state! You need to do a complete "factory Reset" After the COMPLETE factory reset, you then start the Z22 and name it Absolutely identical to your computer's Z22 name, and then try again to connect. Replace it.

You may be charging the Palm, but the computer thinks you are tiring to make a connection and communicate. It seems your computer needs drivers to correct the problem.

Yes it can be repaired. It might not be worth it though with parts and labor. Depends how new it is.

Hi rick: There are 3 main problems with the "AGING" Palm Z22, and one of the most common is the failing touch screen. Hi suzbt: JOY's answer, that you try to do a SYSTEM RESTORE on your Computer to get the data back is a really good one, that I did not think of! All manual instructions, and USER instructions on doing a SYNC with the Palm Z22, REPEAT : 1/ Always have a back up of the hard data 2/ Always check all transferred DATA on a SYNC, "Even if it states 'transfer Successful'", 3/ Even, if necessary, write down the data, ... There are a few software programs to identify FILE problems on the Z22, listed on my web page: http://kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html and ways to recover corrupt data, but these are getting more and more difficult to find and use... User comments on the SYNC indicate that any SYNC is a risky procedure, and backups and re-checking all data is necessary at all times. Many people report issues with trying to connect the Palm Z22 to new 64 BIT Operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8, and although somewhat obscure and time-consuming to set up, this can be done. ONE known software company has a 64 BIT driver, which, when used with other software, can get the SYNC functions working again. Another method is to put a VIRTUAL Windows XP on the Windows 64 BIT Systems, and then SYNC using the already working WIndows XP to get the data from files on the "new" 64 Bit Systems, and back... I also deal with battery problems, touch screen problems, maintenance, repair, and upkeep issues, so that you may find the page of value! Hi topplady: The SYNC CABLE for the Palm Z22 is just the everyday, ordinary, USB "MIMI" cable that all USB devices like cell phones, MP3 players, etc. used for years. These used to be plentiful in 'dollar' stores, but have been replaced with the "MICRO" plug which is much thinner, so you may have to look around. I find piles of them in "Value" "Thrift" type stores now, since they are falling out of popularity, but they are everywhere if you take the time to look - and, since they are getting obsolete, they are really cheap... You can go online and look for " MINI USB CABLE" on Amazon, eBay, etc. where they are readily available... Hello cskennedy: Many people are asking the same question, as well as how to deal with touchscreen and battery problems etc. I have really explored all the aspects keeping a Z22 up and running, and have a complete web page devoted to this. I am repeating a previous answer below: The support page for the Z22 has moved around over the last couple of years. HP (Hewlett Packard) bought PALM and still has a fairly good coverage of what WAS available. Beware that Windows has gone to 64 BITS with Windows 7, Windows 8 etc, so that older software does NOT immediately work. There are many features of the Z22 such as NEWS and GAME web portals that are shut down, so that peripheral connectivity is at a minimum. I am repeating a previous answer, since it covers most of the common problems : The Palm Z22 is, I have found out, a bullet-proof design in regards to reliably keeping your valuable "DATA" safe over time. The Engineers at PALM really did a good job of Data integrity compared to many other devices. HOWEVER -- there are 3 common problems with the growing AGE of the Z22, 2 are with the dying batteries, and 1 with the years of wear and tear on the touch screen. The battery is a typical square, thin, modern Lithium battery, wired in with two wires ( + positive, red, and - negative, black ) that can be taken out and replaced if you take the unit apart. In a brand new, in-the-box package, the battery is dying simply from old age. If the Z22 was used heavily, the constant cycling from dead to fully charged wears out the battery even more. The Touchscreen is a thin layer of plastic stretched over a sheet of glass, with a tiny air gap in between. Over time, the top plastic layer deforms - with hot and cold, air pressure changes, and being pressed by wearing the unit in a pocket, purse, briefcase, or even in a drawer with pencils, pens, and staplers etc. It is very important to have a hard cover over the screen! Other than just having the battery loose its weak charge continually, there is a problem with the unit getting into a state of BLACK SCREEN - it does not charge and remains "apparently" dead, since the logic circuits are in an invalid state, and it can only be reset if the battery dies COMPLETELY to remove the power on the logic circuits. I have covered the topics of the battery problems, the data problems, the screen problems, and the disassembly, maintenance, and security, and how to get data off the unit, particularly to the new Windows Operating Systems that were developed AFTER the Z22 was no longer made.
