Your model has something called an
Auto Damper between freezer and fresh food compartment. Click here for a
photo=> MZD2768GES Controls part
listed as number 8 in that photo part=> 61005991 Damper Control Assembly and your ADC adaptive defrost control=>61005971Adaptive Defrost Control
and that is part 13 in the photo above inside the control panel in fresh food
compartment. Either of one of those fail and ice will build up behind freezer
wall to the point of either no defrost to erratic defrost. Here is a link here
that shows a short movie of what no defrost causes=> HERE. I have the service
manual but am no longer to post it here because now Whirlpool owns Maytag and
they have become very strict about publishing on-line yet I do communicate with
Whirlpool and can assist you one on one through contacting me here or my web
site. Sounds like you have a defrost drain blockage also but that will be no
problem once we find the root cause. Is the rear wall of freezer showing a
frost line building up? Please feel free to contact me and I will be glad to
assist you and if it is something I cannot post here I can assist you through
Whirlpool, Thanks, Sea Breeze
Hi
Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

The freezer control will normally make a ticking noise when starting and stopping the compressor. If it is clicking on and off in abnormally short intervals, you could have a component failure that needs a technician's attention.
The overload on the compressor will also make a clicking noise when it trips. If this overload is tripping, the refrigerator and freezer will normally not be cooling properly. This lack of cooling may take several days to appear.
